Anchor Julie Chen Moonves: ‘Everything Shifted’ After Trusting Christ

By Movieguide® Contributor

Former THE TALK host Julie Chen Moonves recently spoke with Kathie Lee Gifford about her conversion to Christianity and her memoir, “But First, God.”

“I am only five years into my walk [with God], and I wanted to tell everyone about my spiritual awakening because I want people to know that it is never too late to start a personal relationship with God,” Moonves explained. “I didn’t find Him until I was 48 years old. I spent so much of my life, you know, making my career and work my false idol.”

“Julie Chen before she found God was a self-absorbed, career-minded, vain, gossipy, fun to be with, but probably kind of a shallow person,” she said previously.

“When I started putting God first, wow, everything shifted,” she continued. “I looked at everything differently and I went about my whole life differently and I got peace that I never knew existed.”

“Like, who doesn’t want peace in their life, you know, no more drama, no more anxiety, no more worrying and it just really changed how, you know, how I’m a wife, how I’m a mother, how I interact with people,” she added.

“Julie Chen Moonves, who now knows the Lord, is someone who wants to help others, who wants to look at everyone with a soft heart,” Moonves explained.

For Moonves, the most remarkable part of her conversion was understanding God’s love for the world.

“I didn’t know how much God loves me, and I didn’t know how much God loves everyone, and He has no favorites. So, like, I didn’t realize, like, the person that I thought or the people in my head that I thought were, you know, my enemy—my adversary—the person that I have a hard time loving…I better find a treasure cause God loves that person,” she said.

This realization allows her to see others as God does—with an inherent value that cannot be taken away or destroyed.

“I couldn’t do any of this until I started learning who God is and why He created us. He created all of us to glorify Him and to love one another.”

She also revealed that since becoming a Christian, she has cut down on the business that used to consume her life.

“I had no purpose [before finding Christ], I was very busy, and what I’ve learned is that Satan, he loves when you’re busy because then you don’t have time to ‘be still and know that He is God,’” she said.

These lessons and more are available now in Moonves’ audio memoir “But First, God,” available now.

Movieguide® previously reported:

For television producer and news anchor Julie Chen Moonves, faith in God helped her to forgive, reconcile and find eternal hope after a difficult season where she felt betrayed.

The former THE TALK host recently shared her testimony in a new audiobook titled, “But First, God.”

In the audiobook Chen talks about coming to faith in God in 2018 following her husband, Les Moonves, being forced to step down as chairman of CBS due sexual misconduct allegations. As a result, Chen was also forced to step down from THE TALK

“Leslie is a good man and a loving father, devoted husband and inspiring corporate leader. He has always been a kind, decent and moral human being. I fully support my husband and stand behind him,” she said of her husband.

However, the situation still left Chen confused and angry.
