Wondering what AMERICAN IDOL Season 23 winner Jamal Roberts is up to? We’ve got all the details.
“My life has changed drastically,” he said in an interview with Billboard. “I went home and thought I could do the same thing I was doing before I left and I found that to be a lie.”
The gospel singer originally intended to return to his job as a P.E. teacher, but “people were coming up to the school [to see me] and I thought, ‘This won’t work.’ So I had to make that ultimate decision.”
“As an employee, I had to leave, but I still show up and volunteer all the time because this is where my passion is and my heart is, as well as music,” he explained.

Now, Roberts focuses solely on his musical career. He recently performed the National Anthem at this year’s College Football Playoff National Championship game.
“Truly honored to have sung the National Anthem at the CFP National Championship 🇺🇸🏈” he captioned an Instagram video of his performance. “Beyond grateful for this moment and excited to share that my new single ‘Head Up’ is on the way.”
The song joins his previous singles, “Heal,” “Mississippi” and “Nothing Compares.”
Speaking to Billboard about his music, Roberts said, “Like I told my label and producers and my manager, I don’t want to put out an album right now. Why don’t we just do what we’re doing? Keep people wanting more and let them support me 100% and I’m loving that.”
Roberts also makes sure to share his Christian faith with his fans, as well. In a post celebrating his AMERICAN IDOL win, he declared, “God is so good. 🙏🏾”
“From my first step on that stage to this unbelievable moment, I never dreamed a kid from my hometown would one day be called AMERICAN IDOL,” he continued. “This journey has been bigger than me, and I’m so grateful for every person who believed in me when I was just chasing a dream.”
He added that he hopes his daughters “see this and know that with faith, hard work, and heart, anything is possible…Now, I get to make music with the best in the world and share my story. But this isn’t the end…it’s just the beginning. From the bottom of my heart…. THANK YOU! None of this happens without y’all.”
