Astros’ Mauricio Dubón Calls Miraculous MLB Career ‘A Blessing’

Houston Astros shortstop Mauricio Dubón reflected on his miraculous journey to the MLB, becoming the “first-ever Honduran born and raised baseball player.”
Dubón grew up in Honduras, “where baseball does not enjoy the popularity that it does in some other Latin American countries [and] he had to work harder to get attention on the field.”
“You grow up fast,” Dubón explained. “I think it’s always a place you need to watch your back. You got to become older than what you are. I tell people you have to learn how to take care of yourself and learn how to survive.”
“And I think that’s one of the reasons I’m here,” he continued. “One of the reasons I made it to the big leagues. It’s hard but I can relate myself with harder stuff in my life before getting to the big leagues and I think that’s what keeps me humble and going.”
When he was 15, a group of missionaries spotted Dubón and offered to bring him back to the United States so he could perfect his baseball skills.
“I just came here to pursue my baseball career. I know God had a plan for me over here in the States, so that’s why I came,” Dubón said.
He eventually landed in the MLB with the Boston Red Sox in the 2013 draft. From there, he would play for the Milwaukee Brewers, San Fransisco Giants and the Houston Astros.
However, Dubón’s connection to the MLB began before he left Honduras.
On Sports Spectrum’s “Get in the Game” podcast, host Scott Linebrink shared how he and St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright visited Honduras on a mission trip to provide clean water to the people there.
“Little did they know that living in a nearby community was a future major league player, Mauricio Dubón, now with the Houston Astros,” Sports Spectrum reported. “A few days after that trip, Dubón left Honduras to pursue his MLB career.”
“Growing up, he had felt the effects of unclean drinking water, experiencing occasional illnesses because of it,” Sports Spectrum added. Earlier this year, Dubón got to thank Wainwright personally for his work to support his community.
“I learned that if you ask, you shall receive,” he said of his baseball career. “I try to honor Him every time I get the chance. There’s a reason why I’m here. There’s a reason why He put me in this spot. I wouldn’t be here without Him.”
“I think the most humble thing to do and the way to honor him the most is to mention Him anytime I get the chance. It’s been a blessing for Him to put me here,” Dubón added.

Sports Spectrum reported, “Over seven innings (the longest outing of his season), Wainwright allowed just four hits (the fewest of his season) and zero runs (his first scoreless outing since Aug. 18, 2022). He became the oldest Cardinals pitcher with an appearance of seven or more scoreless innings. His first strikeout on the night was the 2,200th of his career, and his last two strikeouts moved him to 65th on the MLB all-time list.”
The Cardinals beat the Brewers 1-0, marking Wainwright’s 200th win and landing him on a list of only five other active MLB pitchers to reach that status.
“I’m living prayer to prayer out there,” Wainwright stated in a press conference after the game. “Not even pitch to pitch, just prayer to prayer. And I know Goldy [teammate Paul Goldschmidt] has told me several times that he stays in prayer while I’m out there pitching, just praying for me trying to finish the job. I’ve just got such a great support staff.”
