Deion Sanders Shares Testimony on RUNNING WILD With Bear Grylls

By Movieguide® Contributor

University of Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders opened up about his faith during his time on RUNNING WILD with Bear Grylls.

The coach told Grylls about how, despite the success he found through his sports career, he still felt empty.

Sanders said, “Honestly, man, behind the veil, behind the mask, I’m really different than my public persona. My public persona is ‘Prime Time,’ you know?”

“When I won my first Super Bowl, I was the first one on the bus, first one to bed,” he revealed. “I didn’t even go to party. It was something missing inside, man. It wasn’t as fulfilling as I thought it was. It wasn’t about the things, the outward things, because I had power, money and sex. But it wasn’t fulfilling.”

Then Sanders described how going through a divorce impacted him.

“It was an empty feeling still,” he said. “That’s when I went through my first divorce in which the only things that I knew that truly loved me were my two kids. Now they’re gone, now they’ve been taken away. It was devastating, and I went through suicidal thoughts, a suicidal period.”

“It was something that I had to fix and I couldn’t fix it,” he said previously about that time in his life. “I tried to pay it off, it wouldn’t go away. I tried to sex it up, it wouldn’t go away. I never use drugs or alcohol so I couldn’t medicate the pain. But I tried to do various things to see if it would go away. (I would) wake up and I still feel the same.”

“I ran this car off the side of the highway, and at the bottom, I thought this car would just flip, and it didn’t flip, and I was still there. Shortly after that, I just had to come to the Lord with my hands up and say, ‘I’m done. I can’t do it anymore. You got me. I give up. God, you take me,’” the coach explained.

Sanders captioned, “The outward things will never satisfy you like GOD can, will and does. God is Great & God Is Good! I’m thankful I was able to share my testimony.”

In a separate video, Sanders and Grylls climb on a cliff in the desert. While the coach struggled, he began to pray, and God helped him overcome his fears.

“I said, ‘Lord, you didn’t bring me way out here to end it. You don’t play games. You never lied to me. You’ve never forsaken me; You’ve never let me down,’” he prayed.

Sanders wrote, “The Lord didn’t bring you this far just to leave you. Call on his name! He may not answer when you want, but he’s always right on time!”

Movieguide® recently reported on Sander’s faith:

During a speaking engagement with the “7 Figure Squad,” the interviewer asked Sanders, “If there are athletes right now, in whatever sport, and you like their example on the field and also off the field, who would you tell them to watch.”

Without hesitation, Sanders answered, “Jesus.”

“Oftentimes, you got to understand those things that you see, those things that you clap for, those things that you cheer for, those things that you idolize, they’re not role models, they’re models playing a role,” he explained.

“You don’t know who they are. You just saw them doing what they’re gifted and blessed to do for two hours of the day,” the coach continued.

“Could you imagine if the world got an opportunity to see you at your best for two hours a day. How your profile would just be enhanced,” Sanders added. “Everything would be wonderful, and everything would be so different because we’re showing you for two hours doing what you’re gifted to do.”

“We got to be careful who we’re calling role models,” he concluded.
