Mark Wahlberg Prioritizes Recovery After Workouts: God’s ‘Best Possible Gifts’

While Mark Wahlberg is known for his early mornings and intense workouts, the actor revealed that he is prioritizing rest and recovery as he gets older.

“I mean, look, I just, you know, get more and more injuries and not recovering the way I should,” Wahlberg told Fox News Digital, explaining why he changed his longstanding routine. “There’s no reason why anybody, never mind somebody at 52 years old, needs to be training, seven days a week and then doing two a days.”

“You’re just putting a pounding on your body and recovery, you know, God has given us the best possible gifts. One of them is sleep right to recover and to heal and also even cold water,” he continued.

Wahlberg’s previous routine included waking up at 2:30 a.m., followed by prayer time and a 90-minute workout.

Now, though, rather than working out to get faster and stronger, Wahlberg has shifted his focus to maintaining his health so he can be there for his kids – and someday his grandkids – for many years to come.

“Taking a cold plunge and doing that, resting two days a week and really kind of just focusing on being able to move and feel good for the long haul and hopefully drag this beautiful thing called life for as long as possible, as opposed to just worrying about aesthetically trying to get bigger and stronger and then ultimately getting injured,” he explained.

Wahlberg also wants to set a good example for his kids, showing them a sustainable way to workout.

“[I want] to share that with my kids, who now love to work out. I want to make sure that hopefully they can avoid making some of the mistakes that I made,” he said.

“Eat right, exercise and rest, and you know what? You have to find the balance. You don’t want to live a boot camp type of existence. You want to go out, have fun, reward yourself for your hard work,” Wahlberg continued. “I think everybody wants to celebrate their accomplishments as they should be able to. Then you get up the next day and you get after it and I think finding a nice balance and a nice routine is key.”

Even as he changes his routine, however, Wahlberg has made sure that there is ample time for his faith.

He explained that he has “nice, quiet time” every morning where he gets on his “hands and knees, [to] express my gratitude, reflect and think about the things that I should be doing.

“I like to get as much stuff done before the kids got to get up for school,” Wahlberg continued. “That way, I’m not taking time in the middle of the day to focus on all these other things that I need to do to be the best version of myself.”

In 2018, Mark Wahlberg went viral for a morning routine that started with a 2:30 a.m. wake-up; five years later, he explains that his routine changed for his high schoolers.

“I’ve been going like, 3:30 wake-up, 4 o’clock in the gym, kind of finish that, get my reading and my prayer time done, and then start the process of waking them up, which usually ends up taking – I’m up and down the stairs at least three times to get the teenagers up, and I get them off to school, and then I usually start the rest of my day,” Wahlberg told Today.com.

While Wahlberg’s oldest, Ella, 20, is in college, he still has a handful at home with three teens: Michael, 17, Brendan, 15, and Grace, 13.

While most of his kids follow a typical teenage schedule, the actor’s youngest, Grace, picked up his early routine, fueled by her passion for equestrian.
