How TODAY Host AL Roker Walked 100 Miles in 21 Days

By Movieguide® Contributor

TODAY host Al Roker has already walked 100 miles in just the first three weeks of 2024.

In a video he posted on his Instagram, Roker shares the milestone with his followers as he walks on his treadmill.

“I have cleared 100 miles as of Friday, which was very exciting,” he said in the video. “I have to admit I was very fortunate in that I had a couple of high-mileage days. But on average, I did about 4 miles a day, and you can do it, too.”

“It adds up,” he added. “Park a little further from the store or go walk to your neighbor instead of driving. It’s the little things that make a difference.”

“Hit my #january#starttodaychallenge,” he captioned the video. “@stepitupwithsteph tasked us with a #100milewalkingchallenge and I made it by crossing the 100 mile mark Friday!! How are you doing with your challenge, @starttoday_ family? Still plenty of time!! Check out the @facebook page.”

Ever since his health scare in 2022, Roker has been on a health and fitness journey to improve his quality of life.

Movieguide® reported:

The problems began in November, when Roker woke up in the middle of the night with severe stomach pain. An internist ran scans that showed he had blood clots in his lungs that had traveled there from his legs.

He was hospitalized for treatment when doctors discovered he was also bleeding internally. Roker was treated and doctors stabilized him. He was sent home in time for Thanksgiving. However, just a few days later, he felt faint and was rushed back to the hospital.

Roker was still bleeding internally and the doctors were unsure where the blood was coming from. After weeks of tests, they discovered a perforation in his small intestine. The doctors repaired the tear and Roker has since made a full recovery.

As part of his health journey, Roker has walked at least 10,000 steps every day for the last 200 days. “He’s also walked the Brooklyn half marathon and lost 45 pounds thanks to his walking routine,” TODAY reported.

To help anyone struggling to start or continue their fitness journey, the TV host shared these nine tips:

  1. Change your vocabulary to change your mindset
  2. Take your walks on vacation with you
  3. Get it done early
  4. Prioritize sleep
  5. Find a support group
  6. Get steps in whenever you can
  7. Know that every day won’t be easy
  8. Play “I Spy”
  9. Adopt the motto: “Something is better than nothing”

Movieguide® previously reported on Roker’s health and fitness routine:

Now, Roker puts his health first and even begins his day on the treadmill while going over his weather briefings.

“This way, I’ve knocked out 6,000 to 7,000 steps on the way to 10,000 for the day,” he explained.

“One of the many things I’ve learned from my wife is we do what we can. If you can’t do four miles, what if you do a mile or a half a mile?…Maybe it’s not everything you wanted to do, but tomorrow is another day and you did something,” Roker said.
