Denver Nuggets small forward Michael Porter Jr. prayed for Kat Emrick, a human trafficking survivor, on his podcast after hearing her story.

“You sharing your story…it’s important, like it really is, and…I really hope God makes himself real to you,” the athlete said.

“Obviously, I feel terrible about what happened to you, but it’s more just, all you went through, like, God is going to use your story in a way that is really powerful for a lot of people,” he said. “You save a lot of lives, you give people courage to talk about their situation.”
Porter Jr. continued, “So, I just wanted to ask you if I could pray for you, and then I wanted to invite you to church on Sunday because you said you haven’t been to church for a while. Let’s go Sunday.”
The basketball player then prayed for Emrick.
“Dear Lord, thank you for Kat,” he began. “I want to thank you, just the woman she is, Lord, and I just want to thank you for the healing that you’ve brought about in her life and giving her the vulnerability and the courage to share her story. Thank you for the woman she is. I ask that you make yourself real to her. Heal her in ways that she didn’t even know was possible. Show yourself to her. Make her whole. Give her complete confidence and wholeness in herself and just help her realize that things that happened to her are not her fault. There’s no shame. There’s no guilt there. You take that all on yourself and just please show her that. We love you, and we appreciate you, and we thank you that even though terrible things happen to all of us, that you somehow can turn that into a beautiful story. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
“I am grateful for people who use their platform to offer a safe space for people like me – to speak,” Emrick posted following the interview. “@mpj provided a safe space for me to share my story on his podcast @curiousmike – though basketball really had nothing to do with our interaction, knowing his passion and love for basketball runs deep as well, made me feel like I was speaking to a friend. I will never forget this experience and I will never forget how welcome they made me feel.”
Though her story is tough, Emrick now uses her platform to support others who have faced similar situations. She has “done hours of research, shared my story on countless platforms, pitched a documentary, spoken at a university, and I’ve embraced my story. My purpose has been made clear in all of this – all of the things I’ve experienced, the darkness I’ve witnessed, and the years of pushing it all down have come to a head & now I get to use my voice to share my story.”
