Why Chris Evans Believes Superhero Movies ‘Deserve A Little More Credit’

By Movieguide Contributor

As someone who’s acted in several superhero movies, CAPTAIN AMERICA star Chris Evans is saying they don’t get enough credit.

Several Marvel movies have been awarded Movieguide®’s Teddy Bear Awards® at the annual Movieguide® Awards Gala for their positive messages about good defeating evil.

“They are these big, giant movies,” Evans said at Emerald City Comic Con last weekend. “There’s a lot of cooks in the kitchen. But the empirical evidence is in: They are not easy to make. If it was easier, there would be a lot more good ones.”

“I’m not throwing shade! I’ve been a part of a few that missed. It happens. Making a movie is tough,” he added.

Evans’ comments coincide with heavily criticized Marvel projects. Some of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s recent ventures haven’t won over audiences like previous ones.

“For much of 2023, the comic-book adaptation machine has struggled to deliver hits both critically and commercially, at the box office and on the small screen,” USA Today said.

The numerous spin-off shows and movies with weak storylines and problems stemming from the SAG-AFTRA strikes have left viewers confused and dissatisfied.

“This year’s Samuel L. Jackson vehicle SECRET INVASION didn’t make sense even if you had seen the movies that created its backstory, and it was dreadfully dull,” USA Today writes. “Even the good series suffer from the forced interconnectedness that feeds the Marvel machine.”

However, Evans says that they shouldn’t be judged too harshly.

“More cooks in the kitchen doesn’t make it easier,” Evans said. “I don’t want to highlight specific films in the Marvel catalog, but some of them are phenomenal. Like independently, objectively great movies, and I think they deserve a little more credit.”

BLACK WIDOW actress Florence Pugh also defended Marvel movies.

“I think there’s beauty in all types of those films. There’s beauty in the massive, epic storylines like DUNE, like Marvel… They’re amazing, mega movies,” she said.

“And then there’s also beauty in all these little ones that not everyone is going to see, but are going to affect the right person at the right time,” Pugh continued.

Movieguide® reported in February that Marvel will try some new techniques to draw viewers back:

Marvel is “quietly retooling” its content amid superhero fatigue and plummeting box office numbers.

Last year’s ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA was one of the franchise’s lowest-performing movies ever, and it’s clear Disney and Marvel are now working overtime to repair their relationship with viewers.

“The focus is internal this year,” a source told The Hollywood Reporter, pointing to reshoots of Disney+ shows like DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN and AGATHA: DARKHOLD DIARIES and the hiring of acclaimed writers for upcoming projects like FANTASTIC FOUR and THUNDERBOLTS.
