Sony Closes CLUE Movie, TV Rights Deal with Hasbro

The classic board game “Clue” might be making its way back to TV soon.

“Hasbro Entertainment has closed a deal with Sony’s TriStar Pictures and Sony Pictures Television for the film and TV rights for the beloved board game,” Variety said on Tuesday.

“Sony is the perfect partner to adapt a property as culturally impactful and mystery-defining as ‘Clue,’” said Hasbro’s Heads of Film and TV. “Nicole Brown, Katherine Pope, and their teams are tremendous creative collaborators and ideal partners to help us figure out after 75 years if it was Colonel Mustard in the conservatory with the candlestick.”

The popular board game dates back to 1943 and has sold over 150 million copies across the world.

This next adaptation won’t be the first one. In 1985, a CLUE comedy came out. It starred Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd and Madeline Khan. Universal recently tried to make a version with Ryan Reynolds, which never came about.

In 2021, Movieguide® reported about an animated CLUE series:

According to TheWrap, [Hasbro]  is working with Fox to launch an animated “Clue” TV series. Other projects include a movie and TV series of “Dungeons & Dragons” and a scripted series based on the board game “Risk.”

There hasn’t been any word on whether the animation is still in development or not.

“There have also been various CLUE game shows over the years, and a scripted CLUE miniseries aired on now defunct cable network The Hub (now Discovery Family) back in 2011,” Variety reported.

The deal “marks the latest attempt by Hasbro to bring their best-known IP to other media. They are currently working on various projects involving properties like ‘Transformer,’ ‘GI Joe,’ ‘Dungeons & Dragons,’ and ‘Magic: The Gathering’ to name just a few,” Variety said.

Hasbro also has a MONOPOLY movie underway with Lionsgate and LuckyChap, per The Hollywood Reporter.
