Is Disney+’s Password Sharing Crackdown Coming to the U.S.?
By Movieguide® Contributor
Disney+ hopes to maximize its profits with the restriction of passwords and the addition of an “Extra Members” feature.
Instead of password sharing, subscribers will have to pay for each Extra Member on their account.
“Each Extra Member added will cost the billpayer £4.99, reports suggest – although Disney is yet to confirm the price,” Mailonline reported July 31, ahead of the feature coming to the UK.
Movieguide® reported in April:
“In June we’ll be launching our first real foray into password sharing,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said during an interview with CNBC. It will begin in “just a few countries in a few markets, but then it will grow significantly with a full rollout in September.”
This change comes after Netflix added password-sharing restrictions to its accounts.
Forbes reported, “Like Netflix, the new Disney rules will let you add individuals outside your household for an additional fee instead of them ‘freeloading.’ The move comes as streaming services must claw and scrape to find new subscribers in a crowded market, in addition to footing bills for pricey content. Disney is no exception.”
Extra Members will have their own account and individual login, but the subscriber will be responsible for the bill.
“An Extra Member may create one profile within Disney+ for their sole use only and may not share their account details with anyone else,” Disney said. “Subscribers and Extra Members are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality and security of their access credentials.”
Per Digital Spy, Extra Members will have some limitations, but Disney hasn’t revealed what those are yet.
“Technically, Disney+ isn’t stopping password sharing but monetizing it, just like Netflix has done,” Mailonline said. “Extra Members won’t have to live in the same household, but they will have to live in the same country, according to Disney.”
Per Iger’s words from April, America can expect to see the same feature by September.
Current Disney+ rules stipulate that subscribers are not allowed to share their subscriptions outside of their household.
The terms read, “We may analyse the use of your account to determine compliance with this Agreement. If we determine that you have violated this Agreement, we may limit or terminate access.”
