In July, Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings donated $7m to Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign, and the platform’s cancellation numbers jumped.

“Cancelations on the streaming platform almost tripled in the United States after Hastings made the massive donation to a super PAC supporting Harris’ presidential bid, Bloomberg reported, citing the researcher Antenna,” Fox Business reported Sept. 30. “Supporters of former President Trump called on conservatives to cancel their subscriptions after Hastings endorsed Harris on X and revealed the large sum of his donation in July.”

“Soon after, the hashtag #CancelNetflix started trending on X, in many cases accompanied by photos of people shuttering their accounts,” The Daily Beast reported.

July saw the highest number of cancellations at 2.8% since Feb. 2024. Bloomberg attributed the loss to Netflix’s announcement that it would phase out its lowest-cost plan but noted that the cancellation numbers were still “unusual.”

Hastings and his wife, Patty Quillin, previously donated $3m to a democratic committee created to stop a recall effort against California Governor Gavin Newsom. Hastings also donated $7m to a charter school-related political action committee in 2018.

“It is unclear if the Harris endorsement affected Netflix beyond the five-day spike in cancelations. Their next financial report will be released in October, according to Bloomberg,” Fox Business said.

There’s more that conservatives and Christians can do to support the kind of content they want, other than just boycotting or canceling a subscription. They can vote with their dollars and support uplifting, wholesome and family-friendly projects.

Early ticket sales are crucial to help advance content by studios like The Kendrick Brothers Productions and Pinnacle Peak Pictures, which helped produce GOD’S NOT DEAD: IN GOD WE TRUST.

Movieguide® reported:

GOD’S NOT DEAD: IN GOD WE TRUST came out Sept. 12. David A.R. White asks that interested viewers buy a ticket and watch the movies in theaters because, like voting promotes victory for a side, buying a ticket promotes a positive, faith-based message that will reach more people.

“If the audience doesn’t come the same way as an election, you know, the outcome is not the same and so, you know, cast your vote for the movie first. Show up on that opening weekend,” he says….

“Just have your voice, because if you don’t do it somebody else will and you’re not going to like what they’re doing,” he said.
