Will Amazon Renew THE RINGS OF POWER?

By Movieguide® Contributor

Insider sources say a Season 3 announcement for THE RINGS OF POWER is coming any day now.

“Amazon is looking to return to Middle-earth,” The Hollywood Reporter wrote, adding that the company is “on the verge” of renewing THE RINGS OF POWER.

THR continued, “While showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay have been prepping the next season’s story for months, the lack of official greenlight has been a source of speculation and concern among some fans — especially since the second season was ordered years before the first season debuted. But the news will likely be announced this month.”

Forbes even reported that Amazon “has a five-season plan” for the show, but that has not been confirmed.

It makes sense that Amazon would announce THE RINGS OF POWER’s third season soon, as Season 2 has been pulling in massive numbers of viewers. Movieguide® previously reported:

Newly released viewership numbers show strong ratings for Amazon’s second season of THE RINGS OF POWER.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon reported “40 million viewers worldwide have watched at least some of the first three new RINGS OF POWER episodes through the sophomore season’s first 11 days.”

The outlet noted that Amazon didn’t clarify “how much of the season, or an episode, those 40 million people viewed.”

The streaming service also reported that RINGS OF POWER “is a Top 5 all-time season for Prime Video (compared to the first 11 days of other shows), and has been No. 1 for the service since its return.”

In an interview with Movieguide®, Payne and McKay discussed their passion for THE RINGS OF POWER.

“It takes an army to make a season of this show,” McKay shared. “I hope when people watch it, [they] can feel, in every scene, the amount of love and reverence that went into trying to adapt this world and bring it to life.”

The stars of the show have spoken about some of the show’s most powerful themes, with Benjamin Walker, who plays Ereinion, telling Movieguide® that much of the show is a “metaphor [for] being a parent.”

“Love and hope is the reason that you do it,” he explained. “‘I’m going to take what I was given and build off of that, and then give the foundation for those that come after me to build off of.’ I can’t think of anything more loving, and that’s quintessentially Tolkeinian.”

Movieguide® previously reported on THE RINGS OF POWER’s themes:

THE RINGS OF POWER creators are sharing their thoughts on the show’s second season, from the creative process to its major themes.

The pair also spoke about the themes of friendship and fellowship in the Movieguide® Award-winning show.

“In every story, we’re getting a different prism on those Tolkeinian pairings and the ways that the battle between good and evil strains and strengthens friendships,” McKay explained, pointing to the relationships between Elendil and Queen Míriel, and Elrond and Galadriel.

Payne agreed, saying that the show focuses on the connection between friendship and fellowship.

“Something that goes along with that is fellowship, and fellowship has an element of friendship in it, but I think it’s something that goes even deeper,” he said. “It’s people who have that baseline friendship but are also bound together by a mutual obligation to the good. The way that they serve that good is going to change, and that’s sometimes where the conflict comes from, but they ultimately are bound together, and that bond, that fellowship is what allows even small people…to overcome great evil, simply by staying true to each other.”
