NASCAR Driver Says ‘Racing Comes Second’ After Birth of First Child

NASCAR star Bubba Wallace says his first baby, son Becks, is “a blessing.”
“It’s been fun. He’s now a few weeks old, and he’s been a blessing,” Wallace told PEOPLE. “People always ask, ‘Are you ready?’ before your kid gets here, and you’re like, ‘I don’t know.’ And I can in fact say no, we were not ready. But it’s been fun figuring it out every day, because every day is something new.”
Wallace and wife, Amanda, announced Becks’ birth earlier this year in an Instagram post.
“Amanda and I would like to introduce you to Becks Hayden! We were blessed with his presence Sunday 9/29,” the couple wrote. “9 months of waiting on this little guy, he’s made it all worth it! So excited for this journey!”
The NASCAR driver talked to Forbes about how his perspective has changed now that Becks is here, saying, “You know, racing comes second now. I don’t say that easily.”
“For the last…22 years, it’s been all racing,” Wallace explained. “Marriage came, that was a great head-to-head there of, you know, showing up to be the best husband you can be and provide for your family then. Well, now you got a little one here.”
He continued, “I climbed out of the car after a great weekend at the ROVAL [a recent race]. As soon as I got back to the bus, none of that mattered anymore. He was, I think he was either awake or he just laid down or something, I don’t know. But that’s all that matters. I asked my wife, ‘how was he?’ How was she? And nothing else mattered at that point. And I thought that was refreshing.”
In addition to his roles as father and NASCAR driver, Wallace also recently appeared on the small screen for Netflix’s NASCAR: FULL SPEED.
