Why THE WILD ROBOT Embraced and Celebrated Motherhood

By Movieguide® Contributor

While many movies avoid the theme of motherhood, one 2024 flick decided to embrace the special role moms play.

THE WILD ROBOT shares the story of a robot named Roz who mothers an orphan gosling named Brightbill. But director Chis Sanders shared that it’s unusual for a movie to feature a mom.

“I learned way back on Aladdin why there aren’t moms in these films,” he said. “When I first started working on Aladdin, there was a mom in the story, and almost immediately, she was causing problems. Your protagonist has to be able to make mistakes. And moms are there to keep you from making mistakes. She very quickly disappeared from the story, and suddenly the movie began to work.”

THE WILD ROBOT, on the other hand, embraces motherhood and the emotions and challenges that come with it.

The heartfelt movie is also extremely emotional, and Sanders said he loves that quality of the film: “I love the built-in emotional cliff. I liked that aspect of it, that Roz would be so focused on raising this gosling that she wouldn’t really see this emotional cliff that she was heading toward.”

The film was rated highly by Movieguide®:

WILD ROBOT is a very special movie. It delightfully affirms motherly love. Also, Roz the robot clearly has Christological, allegorical elements. She teaches the animals to love one another and clearly dies and appears to clearly resurrect. That said, her major characteristic is learning to overcome her cold, pre-programmed nature to develop a loving heart. When the company tries to re-program her, the heart takes over, but that’s not the end of the story. There are many animated action violence situations in WILD ROBOT, including animals consuming one another to survive. However, none of these situations are cruel or violent in a scary, troubling way. So, MOVIEGUIDE® recommends WILD ROBOT for children aged six and up. Adults also will love this story, if they have a heart.

The movie performed so well that a sequel is already in the works. Deadline reported in October that Sanders confirmed “that a sequel to the pic is on the way and currently in development at DreamWorks Animation.”

“100% yes there are absolutely plans for a second one,” Sanders said while at Deadline Contenders.
