Hollywood Star Shares AI Worries: ‘What Is Going to Be [The] Truth?’

Glenn Close is the latest Hollywood star to speak out against the use of AI in the entertainment industry.

“I’m very lucky to have a job,” Close told The Hollywood Reporter. “There were so many people impacted in LA already, and then now with the fires. I was astounded at how few jobs there are in our profession. I’m a big reader of history, and unfortunately, I think not enough people in this country understand the history and what we’ve just gotten ourselves into. That’s very dangerous.”

She added, “On top of that is [artificial intelligence]. What is going to be truth? What is true is going to be a big question.”

Close allowed that her opinion on AI use “depends on how it’s handled,” but added, “I don’t want my image or my voice to be reconstructed.”

“Is it progress that less people will work because of it? I don’t know. I think we’re losing…stories about what it means to be a human being. We have to cling to that,” she continued. “We have to keep coming back and be inspired by things that teach us, that help us with our emotions to know what it means to be human and [to always] to look into somebody else’s eyes — not a screen — but another human being’s eyes. If we lose that, it’ll be a very slippery slope, I’m afraid.”

Close isn’t the only actor who is wary of AI. Last year, Nicholas Cage spoke about his worries that studios will use his and other actors’ likenesses after they’re dead.

“I’m terrified of [AI],” he said. “I’ve been very vocal about it. And it makes me wonder, you know, where will the truth of the artists end up? Is it going to be replaced? Is it going to be transmogrified? Where’s the heartbeat going to be? I mean, what are you going to do with my body and my face when I’m dead? I don’t want you to do anything with it!”

Robert Downey Jr. is equally opposed to the idea that a studio might recreate his voice and image after his death.

The IRON MAN star said he “intend[s] to sue all future executives” who try to digitally recreate him onscreen.
