Anne Wilson explained the inspiration for her album, Rebel, in a recent episode of the “Stay True Podcast” with Madison Prewett Troutt.

“Jesus was such a rebel in that time and in that culture. He went against everything that the religious leaders would’ve wanted Him to do,” Wilson explained.

“These religious leaders, He could not stand them,” the “REBEL” singer continued. “He was so disgusted by their religion and the way that they were walking out their life, and it was like they were going against everything that Jesus was truly there for and truly about and what the Father was calling Him to do.”

Wilson took inspiration from Jesus for her album. She believes that by following Jesus, she’s a rebel like Him.

“The world right now is so far from Him. And the other side of it was like, I’m gonna be authentically who I am,” the singer explained. “I’m not gonna sacrifice my love of the gospel to fit country music. I’m not gonna sacrifice the sound of country to fit Christian [music culture].”

On her Instagram Monday, Wilson shared that she wrote her album out of “rest and rejuvenation.

“It was very life-giving for me. The last record was more of me kind of finding my sound, but this record was just me getting to be myself and having the freedom to write the songs I wanted to write,” she shared.

The song features 16 tracks, and that doesn’t include some songs that were cut out. Every song has a country sound and a faith-based message.

“I have worked so hard on this record. I poured my heart and soul into every single song,” Wilson said when the album was released last year. “I’m so thankful for my co-writers diving deep with me on this project and partnering with me to create these songs. This writing process was the most freeing experience I’ve ever had.”

In the “Stay True Podcast” episode, Wilson and Troutt also talked about God’s design for humanity, comparison struggles and authenticity in the podcast.

Wilson shared that in a particularly hard time when she was struggling with comparison, God spoke to her through artist Lainey Wilson. Lainey told her that God assigned her with a purpose, and no one else can do what God created her for.

“It says in Ephesians 2:10, He had something prepared for you before you were even born. Like you had a plan and purpose before you even took your first breath. He designed you to do it, and no one else can do it,” Troutt affirmed.

Besides encouraging others with her music, Wilson is also changing lives through her book, My Jesus. In it, she shares about losing her older brother and how God can “bring purpose out of loss” and “offer hope.”

God “is so very faithful. To watch what He has done in my life has been an absolute joy and honor,” she said. “Every moment of pain and suffering was used for my good and the good of His kingdom.”
