Disney just announced that a LILO & STITCH 2 is already in development.
“Should’ve known he couldn’t keep a secret, A 626 day surprise: #LiloAndStitch 2 is now in development!” Disney wrote in the caption of an Instagram post. A video of Stitch driving his pink Range Rover through the Disney studio lot accompanied the announcement.
Many fans commented on the post, expressing their excitement for the second film.
“Can’t wait for more FLUFFY CHAOS 💙” Cinemark commented.
“We are ready for more chaos!! 🥳🌊💙” Disney On Ice added.
“Yessah!! 🤙🏽 Can’t keep this guy out of trouble!” Iam Tongi wrote.
Disney has not shared any of the cast and crew for the sequel yet.
So far, the new live-action LILO & STITCH has grossed a total of $910 million globally since Memorial Day, according to Variety, securing the highest-grossing four-day Memorial Day weekend opening in U.S history.
“The love that people have for LILO & STITCH continues to grow, and the goal with this new retelling was for audiences to be able to enjoy these characters on the big screen again and hopefully have just as much fun watching it as we had making it,” Alan Bergman, co-chairman, Disney Entertainment, said in a press release last month.
David Greenbaum, President of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios, added, “Stitch is an example of what Disney actually does best. An extraordinary animated film from 2002 that becomes a series that then, over time, creates a real fanship, which leads to us looking at the idea of creating this wonderful film that we now are bringing out to the world.”
“What people may not realize is that Stitch is actually one of our fastest growing franchises, and he’s global,” he continued. “There’s real affinity for Stitch among boys and girls, men and women.”
Dean Fleischer Camp directed the live-action LILO & STITCH, while Jonathan Eirich and Dan Lin produced it. It stars Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Agudong as Nani and Chris Sanders as Stitch.
A part of Movieguide®’s review for LILO & STITCH reads:
LILO & STITCH is a live-action remake of the 2002 animated science fiction comedy. Lilo is a sad, lonely and sometimes angry 6-year-old orphaned girl in Hawaii. Her parents died, so her older adult sister tries to take care of her. Lilo prays for a friend and finds a small, escaped alien creature whose spaceship crashed on Earth and pretends to be a dog. Lilo takes him home and renames him Stitch, but Stitch causes all sorts of trouble for Lilo and her sister. Meanwhile, the Galactic Federation sends two bumbling aliens to capture Stitch and return him.
The live action LILO & STITCH is lots of fun, with touching moments of rescue and redemption. Sometimes, however, the comical action is awkwardly shot. Eventually, Lilo’s love and devotion change Stitch’s heart, allowing him to feel love and want to be part of her family. Lilo won’t quit loving Stitch no matter how much trouble he causes. The live action LILO & STITCH has lots of comical action violence, however, and very brief light foul language. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children.
Thanks to its massive success and redemptive themes, it isn’t surprising LILO & STITCH will get a sequel.
