YouTube has fully embraced the AI movement.

YouTube is placing more AI-powered recommendations in many users’ feeds. As of June 26, it has a new AI-powered search tool available for Premium users on mobile apps. When users search, they may see a video carousel with AI-powered results, Mashable reported.

“We’re introducing a new AI-powered search results carousel to suggest videos and topic descriptions by creators across YouTube,” YouTube wrote on its blog on June 26. “Imagine searching for ‘best beaches in Hawaii’ — you could see an AI-generated carousel highlighting clips from videos showcasing the best snorkel spots and volcanic beaches, complete with descriptions and more videos to plan your ideal day.”

Google announced in April that an AI-powered feature would come to YouTube, “providing another way to discover content when searching on YouTube as well as discover topics and information related to your search query.”

Google owns YouTube, and both platforms use Google’s Gemini AI tools. TechCrunch asserts the feature is similar to Google’ AI Overviews, which provides summaries of search results at the top of the Google Search results page.

The carousel could be a little problematic for creators, as consumers will be looking at AI search results instead of creators’ content. If the person gets the info they need from the other results, they won’t click the video.

“In the coming days, our conversational AI tool will be expanding to some non-Premium users in the US. Premium members already love it for getting more info, recommendations, and even quizzing themselves on key concepts in academic videos,” YouTube said. “Try it out to discover new videos or master unknown topics.”

The conversational tool is meant to help users go deeper into the content they watch. For example, when someone watches a video, they can ask the tool, “What is the music in this video?” or “What is happening in this video?”

Last year, YouTube introduced nine new AI tools: the conversational AI tool; AI video summaries; live chat summaries; Ask Music, which creates custom music stations and playlists; Inspiration, a YouTube Studio feature that gives suggestions for aspects of content creation; Dream Screen, which offers Ai-generated images for Shorts; Dream Track, which generates music tracks for Shorts; Auto Dubbing; and Posts.

As YouTube continues to ride into the AI frontier, it will need to keep content creators in focus. Creators are the ones who draw viewers to the platform — fewer original videos would mean less money for YouTube.
