TV star and survivalist Bear Grylls says he would “give up” every other accolade he’s achieved to have written his latest book, The Greatest Story Ever Told: An Eyewitness Account.
“I’d give up every Everest summit, every Emmy, every book and TV show I’ve ever done to have written this book. It’s the proudest thing that I’ve achieved,” he said during an interview on THE CHRIS EVANS BREAKFAST SHOW.
Grylls continued, “All the other things have been a privilege and great to do, but…this has come out from the heart. I’m already seeing and hearing stories of thousands of people of all different faiths, from all around the world, sending us messages going ‘It has changed my life.’”
“It’s something bigger than just what we all do in our work,” he concluded.
The Greatest Story Ever Told tells the story of Jesus through the eyes of five of the people who were closest to him: Mary, Thomas, Peter, John and Mary Magdalene. It was published by Hodder Faith, a Christian imprint of publishing house Hodder & Stoughton.
In an Instagram post about the book, Grylls wrote, “This book has been a long time coming and arguably the hardest, scariest project I’ve ever done, because it’s about all of our hearts and futures.”
“People ask me why I care more about this than any other book or summit or award, and the answer is that I feel deep in my spirit that everything that I’ve done has led me to a place where I can share with authority the secret behind all those adventures,” he continued. “Faith is hard to articulate and it never has to be religious in the churchy sense – it’s about finding home, knowing peace in your heart and walking in power into our future. This book is about that.”
The Greatest Story Ever Told has already topped the charts in the UK, hitting No. 1 on the Sunday Times hardback non-fiction bestsellers list.
Hodder Faith’s publishing director, Andy Lyon, said of the book’s success, “To have the story of Jesus at Number 1 is a testament to the life-changing impact of this story – it needs to be proclaimed afresh in each generation and nobody has done it like Bear.”
“This book will be a long-term mission for Hodder Faith and this is just the first milestone of many,” he concluded.
The Greatest Story Ever Told is now available for purchase in America, both online and in stores.
