LILO & STITCH hit theaters on May 23 and had a $146,016,175 opening weekend, outperforming Memorial Day weekend co-release MISSION IMPOSSIBLE–THE FINAL RECKONING, according to Variety.
“LILO & STITCH is the wildly funny and touching story of a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family,” Disney summarized the movie.
Movieguide® praised its “Very strong moral, pro-family worldview, with some Christian, redemptive content,” giving it a +1 content rating. Part of the review reads:
The live action LILO & STITCH is lots of fun, with touching moments of rescue and redemption. Sometimes, however, the comical action is awkwardly shot. Eventually, Lilo’s love and devotion change Stitch’s heart, allowing him to feel love and want to be part of her family. Lilo won’t quit loving Stitch no matter how much trouble he causes. The live action LILO & STITCH has lots of comical action violence, however, and very brief light foul language. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children.
So far, LILO & STITCH has earned over $1 billion at the worldwide box office and set the record as the first film in 2025 to hit that goal.
Dean Fleischer Camp directed, while Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes wrote the screenplay.
Along with Kealoha, the movie stars Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham, Chris Sanders, Courtney B. Vance and Zach Galifianakis.
Jonathan Eirich produced, and Dan Lin, with Tom Peitzman, Ryan Halprin, Louie Provost, Thomas Schumacher, executive produced.
“It’s a family film. That’s why there’s longevity and timelessness to it because its themes are timeless,” Agudong, who plays Nani, told Deadline of what she hope people take away from the movie. “The way that the movie is based in Hawaii is perfect because I feel there’s no better place to represent family in the way that I think it doesn’t matter if you’re related by blood or if you come from a different country or what you look like. You’re always going to find somewhere that you belong. With this reimagination, that’s a huge thing that I want the world to be able to consider and be able to enjoy and remember. Everybody has a place to belong. Family means what you want it to mean.”
LILO & STITCH is now available for digital purchase ($29.99) or to rent ($24.99) on Prime Video and Apple TV.
