THUNDERBOLTS* premiered earlier this summer, bringing in major bucks at the box office. The movie made over $382 million, per BoxOfficeMojo.
The movie focused on a team of previously-seen “bad guy” characters, including Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier, Yelena Belova, John Walker, Taskmaster, Red Guardian, and Ghost.
“After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission,” a synopsis of the movie, via Variety, explained. “Forced to confront the darkest corners of their pasts, will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and unite before it’s too late?”
THUNDERBOLTS* was a hit with audiences and critics alike. Movieguide® praised the movie for its “funny and touching bits,” as well as its “strong redemptive, moral elements about light overcoming darkness, family reconciliation and helping others.”
“Much like the movie speaks about, you can only do something like this if you really rely on a whole bunch of incredible people around you who also connect with that idea,” director Jake Schreier said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter of THUNDERBOLTS* themes of mental health and supporting others through tough times.
He continued, “We just really believed that there was an opportunity to tell a story about that internality and still have a lot of comedy and action for something that feels big and universal.”
Star Florence Pugh, who played Yelena, told Variety, “This movie will help a lot of people. And the underlying message is that we need to be there for each other. We need to open up. We need to connect. Like that, to me is that would be an impressive movie anyway, let alone it being a Marvel movie that thousands of people are gonna go and watch.”
“Really, I was just so impressed that Marvel wanted to do this version of the movie,” she continued. “They’ve made some amazing films with amazing stunt sequences, but how cool to be able to say that we’ve made a movie that is about something that we all struggle with.”
THUNDERBOLTS* is a change of pace for Marvel, and it clearly paid off at the box office. Now, viewers at home have the chance to see these comic book bad guys in a new light.
