Right now, you can watch SUPERMAN in theaters or from the comfort of your own home. The box office success hit streaming earlier this month, despite maintaining a theatrical run.

In an interview with Screen Rant, director James Gun shared the “moving pieces” that contributed to such an early release.

“Well, it’s very complicated, but the truth is it is because of Peacemaker. I originally thought Peacemaker was going to be coming out next month. There was a lot of things that are beyond our control, so that Peacemaker is coming out now, and, at the end of the day, I wanted everyone to be able to see Superman that wanted to, even those people who couldn’t get to a theater before Peacemaker. And that’s really the reason for it.”

SUPERMAN released on July 11, 2025, and promotes a “Strong moral pro-life worldview with a light redemptive tone promotes doing the right thing, compassion, justice, fighting and overcoming tyrannical evil, setting the captives free, and protecting and saving lives.”

Theatergoers craved this uplifting message, and the DC juggernaut made $340,890,135 domestically and $594,590,135 at the worldwide box office.

SUPERMAN is Gunn’s first movie since he took over Warner Bros.’ DC Universe.

“I’m incredibly grateful for your enthusiasm and kind words over the past few days. We’ve had a lot of ‘Super’ in Superman over the years, and I’m happy to have made a movie that focuses on the ‘man’ part of the equation – a kind person always looking out for those in need,” Gunn wrote on Threads. “That that resonates so powerfully with so many people across the world is in itself a hopeful testament to the kindness and quality of human beings. Thank you.”

With several projects already announced – including SUPER GIRL, a SUPERMAN sequel, CLAYFACE, and THE BATMAN PART II–Gunn continues to field questions about what’s next, including if he’ll add Green Arrow/Oliver Queen to his evergrowign universe.

“Is Green Arrow canon? I don’t know. I’m not willing to say yet. We don’t really know. We don’t have Green Arrow as part of our system right now. So maybe Green Arrow exists, maybe he doesn’t, I’m not sure,” Gunn said.

For now, Gunn says his priority is PEACEMAKER Season 2.
