Colton Dixon just celebrated his twin daughters’ fifth birthday, and he reflected on the special milestone and how much his girls mean to him.
“It’s hard to believe Dior and Athens are turning 5!” Dixon told PEOPLE. “Having them in our lives has been the greatest joy and we are excited for this next phase of life with them. Every day is an adventure! We are honored God chose us to be their parents.”
The AMERICAN IDOL alum explain how the family’s birthday celebration began.
“We started the day with lunch on the beach, where the girls surprised me with a gold plaque for [Dixon’s song ‘Miracles’]!” he said. “Seeing them walking up with it is a memory I will always treasure!”
After that, the family went to celebrate at Disneyland.
“We ended their birthday celebrations at their favorite place in the world — Disneyland! We made some new princess friends while we braved the heat at the happiest place on earth!”
Dixon also took to Instagram to share a photo from the special day of his two girls and Princess Jasmine.
“Thank you @people for sharing our birthday celebrations for Athens and Dior!” he said in the caption. In the comment section, fans gushed over the girls. “Cute! happy birthday to your adorable girls!!!” one person said. Another fan added, “They just keep on getting more adorable!”
Dixon’s wife, Annie, also took to Instagram to share sweet milestones of the girls throughout the years.
“Happy 5th Birthday to our precious Dior and Athens! What a gift and JOY they are!!! 💗💗 I believe 5 will be their best year yet 🥳” she said in the caption.
Five years ago, the girl’s story looked much different than it does today.
Dior was unexpectedly born without a pulse. In a prior discussion with PEOPLE, Dixon shared, “We never expected our little Ava Dior would arrive in the world without a pulse. In that moment, we had a choice: faith or fear. We watched and prayed as the doctors and nurses resuscitated our daughter back to life.”
Thankfully, doctors succeeded in saving Dior’s life.
“After several days in the NICU, Dior was able to join us at home, happy and healthy,” he continued. “That was a great day. Life doesn’t always happen the way we want it to, but we believe that life is more about the way we respond to things than what happens to us. We thank God and our amazing doctors and nurses for our two little miracles.”
