Nintendo released the name for its upcoming Mario-based movie, and its title reveals the direction that the story will take as it builds on the success of the first film.
“We are hard at work on the next movie, and we’re working very closely with the team at Nintendo,” Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri said in July when discussing the upcoming movie. “It’s my hope that the movie will entertain and be embraced by the core fans first, but we also hope that the film will appeal to new fans who have not yet embraced Mario and the world of Nintendo.”

Nintendo revealed the title of the upcoming movie – THE SUPER MARIO GALAXY MOVIE – during a 40th anniversary celebration of the release of the original “Super Mario Bros.” video game. The title release came with a teaser trailer which showed Mario snoozing under a tree before panning to different parts of the Mario world, such as a Monty Mole burrowing around and Cheep Cheeps swimming in a river. Finally, Princess Peach’s castle comes into view before the camera focuses on the sky above, zooming into space where the title is revealed.
Based on the title, the movie’s plot will mostly come from the 2007 Wii game “Super Mario Galaxy” and the 2010 sequel “Super Mario Galaxy 2.” While featuring game mechanics like low gravity and new, unique power-ups, the Super Mario Galaxy games also introduced the character Rosalina and her sidekicks, Lumas. A Luma was actually featured in the first movie and was met by Luigi after being captured by Bowser.
Released in 2023, THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE was extremely successful, grossing $1.36 billion at the global box office due to its fun, family-friendly story. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

The sequel was first announced in March of 2024, when Nintendo executive Shiguro Miyamoto said the game company had begun work on a follow-up story.
“This is Miyamoto. We are now creating a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. This film is planned for release in theaters on April 3rd, 2026 in the US and many other markets, and throughout the month of April in other territories,” he said. “We’ll let you know the details once we’re ready to share more. This time too, the staff at Illumination and Nintendo are working together. We’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further, and it’ll have a bright and fun story. We hope you’ll look forward to it!”
It is extremely fun now that we know what this movie will focus on. It will expand the Mario universe even further and take audiences on a galactic trip like no other.
