Dolly Parton wakes up at 3 a.m. every day to pray and think.

“Sometimes it’s earlier than that,” Parton, 79, told PEOPLE. “That’s when I do all my spiritual work, my prayers and my dreaming, my thinking, when all the energies of the world have kind of died down.”

“I’m like my dad. And the older you get, the earlier you wake up, I’ve noticed that too,” she said. “I don’t want to miss nothing either.”

She says she just doesn’t need a lot of sleep.

She said, “It seems to work for a long time, and I don’t see that changing. I’m an early bird.”

And when she’s not praying, thinking or cooking up more music, she’s cooking food for family or reading — in her high heels.

“I’m short, I got to reach my cabinets!” she joked. “I like to put on a little makeup.”

“I don’t always wear the wigs, but I like to pull my hair up a little bit. Because I never know who’s going to come by or if somebody has to come fix my refrigerator or whatever.”

Since her husband, Carl Dean, died in March, Parton has slowed down a little. She canceled an event due to a kidney stone infection and postponed her Las Vegas residency, pushing it to fall of next year.

She also missed the 16th Academy Governors Awards on Sunday and accepted her honorary award virtually.

“We didn’t have too much to share, but my mama and daddy showed me that the more you give, the more blessings come your way,” said Parton in the virtual video. “And I have been blessed more than I ever dreamed possible, like with this award tonight. From my heart to yours, I truly thank you.

“Dolly is getting better every day. She is at home taking care of herself while many friends and family visit her,” a source close to Parton told PEOPLE. “In true Dolly spirit she has already started decorating for the holidays — her favorite time of year.”

She recently got out to visit a few stores to promote her book, Star of the Show. And she intends to be at her close friend Reba McEntire’s wedding to Rex Linn, whenever that may be.

According to friends of McEntire and Parton, Parton joked she would “raise merry h***” if McEntire proceeded with the wedding without giving her a role in it, International Business Times reported.

Reba reportedly laughed off the comment, adding Dolly’s presence is expected and meaningful.
