Disney’ TOY STORY 5 is the “most anticipated” movie of the summer, even more so than SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY, which boasts the most watched trailer in the world.
In a recent Fandango survey, 5,000 voters said their most anticipated movie of the summer is TOY STORY 5. It ranks above SPIDER-MAN and THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2.
Fans have been eager to see the movie since it was first announced three years ago, Parade reported.
The movie’s synopsis reads, “The toys are back in Disney and Pixar’s TOY STORY 5, and this time it’s Toy meets Tech. Buzz, Woody, Jessie and the rest of the gang’s jobs are challenged when they’re introduced to what kids are obsessed with today….electronics!”
The movie is directed by Andrew Stanton, co-directed by Kenna Harris and produced by Lindsey Collins.

It may surprise some that TOY STORY 5 is more anticipated than BRAND NEW DAY. The new Spider-Man movie’s trailer had 718.6 million views in its first 24 hours, which is nearly double of the previous record — DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE’s 365 million views. BRAND NEW DAY broke that record after just eight hours, Variety reported.
It is not just the biggest movie trailer but biggest trailer for anything, ever. The GRAND THEFT AUTO VI held that title until now for its 475 million views in a 24-hour window. BRAND NEW DAY’s marketing team created a lot of buildup and anticipation for the trailer, which helps explain its success.
The villain in the new TOY STORY movie is Lilypad, Bonnie’s new tablet.
“When tech comes in, it wins,” said Stanton. “It happens to adults and kids. It just wins.”
“So that was the more interesting slant to take: there’s no competition. Have a kid playing with toys, drop in a screen device and see what happens,” he explained. “And so we leaned into the truth of that, and had fun with that.”
Tech was the biggest motivation for them to create a new TOY STORY.
“The biggest thing that was lingering all this time is the way that technology has usurped playtime in real life. Lily is representative of what we’re up against,” he said.
“My co-director, McKenna Harris, is 30, which is my kids’ age,” he says. “I’m not writing them off as some lost generation. They’re just as hungry and passionate and clever as you ever thought your generation was.”
He added, “It’s made me a lot more hopeful about how the youth are going to navigate through this than I was before.”
The movie hits theaters on June 19.
