More Detail:
Millions of people across the world believe that aliens exist. This has been recently fueled by the US government, which came out in 2017 with video from the US Navy showcasing UFO sightings and pronouncing unidentified flying objects as real. Many people believe aliens not only exist but also that they abduct humans. To some, this is a ludicrous thought, but to others, encounters with aliens and UFOs have caused great trauma and changed their entire lives. The movie interviews some of these people.
One of them is Amanda Llewellyn, a writer and director on the documentary, who has had multiple alien encounters. According to her testimony, there were times when Amanda was actually lifted out of her bed and taken to an alien spaceship. Some of these times felt like minutes, but when she’d arrive back in her house, she’d find that great chunks of time had gone by.
The uncanny part is that many people have had this exact same thing happen to them. This is something that Amanda and her husband, Wes, the Co-Director, discovered after talking to people. After this realization, they decided they would travel the United States and interview people about it.
They gather interviews from pastors, scientists, theologians, astronomers, and random people off the street. Some have mind-blowing stories about their encounters with aliens, while others think it’s a hoax.
The movie’s narrator, Amanda’s husband Wes, walks through a series of questions throughout the documentary to help viewers think critically about what is happening. Some are straightforward questions like “What do we really know?” and “What are we seeing?” while others are more complex, like the big question of how the UFO phenomenon fits with our Christian faith.
UFOs AND GOD is both fascinating and terrifying. Hearing from people about their encounters with aliens is one thing in a movie, but in a documentary where they actually believe in alien encounters, and they have had one for themselves, changes the atmosphere drastically. The documentary moves very quickly with lots of visuals, interviews and supporting facts. It keeps your attention and fulfills what it’s trying to do. Both sides of the argument are shown clearly. There is a lot of information that is communicated throughout the 94-minute runtime, and it warrants close attention and maybe even a rewatch.
UFOs AND GOD comes from the stance of a Christian worldview. Both Wes and Amanda are strong believers, as are most of the people interviewed. For example, the filmmakers interview theological apologists such as Greg Koukl and Kennth Samples and astronomer High Ross, founder of the Christian group Reasons to Believe. Many of the people interviewed actually come to a belief in God or become more serious in their walk with God after their terrifying alien encounters. Wes explores the possibility of aliens being demons, and what their intentions are. He also breaks down the most important part, which is how the UFO phenomenon affects what we believe about God and how we interpret all of this biblically. 1 Thessalonians 5:21 is quoted, which says, “Test all things; hold fast to what is good.” Wes shares about the crossroads in his path while he was struggling with his belief in both God and aliens. He shares that, whatever happens or goes on in this life and in the universe, Jesus loves us and He died on the cross for our sins. He adds we can be certain of this and hold fast onto this propositional faith.
UFOs AND GOD has some scary images of aliens and demons, plus alien nudity. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children.
