Epiphany Prize Money for Inspiring Movies & TV Doubles to $200,000, Faith & Values Awards Spokesmen Say

Family and child advocate Dr. Ted Baehr, co-founder of the Annual Faith & Values Awards Gala, and Dr. Jack Templeton, president of the John Templeton Foundation, announced today that the Foundation is doubling the prize money for the two Epiphany Prizes for Inspiring Movies & TV from $100,000 to $200,000.

The two winners of the Most Inspiring Movie of 2008 and the Most Inspiring Television Program of 2008 will each be awarded a total of $100,000 in prize money at the 17th Annual Movieguide® Faith & Values Awards Gala and Report to the Entertainment Industry on Feb. 11, 2009 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.

“This is an extremely gracious decision by the Templeton Foundation,” Dr. Baehr said. “We are very excited that the Foundation continues to see the impact that positive, spiritually uplifting entertainment from Hollywood can have on our culture.”

The Epiphany Prizes are handed out to the major people behind the best, most spiritually uplifting movie and television program that leads to “a great increase in man’s love and/or understanding of God.”

Last year’s winners of two $50,000 Epiphany Prizes were “Amazing Grace” and Hallmark Hall of Fame’s “The Valley of Light” on CBS. Previous winners have included “Amistad,” “The Preacher’s Wife,” “Touched by an Angel,” “7th Heaven,” “Walker, Texas Ranger,” the first “Chronicles of Narnia” movie, and “The Passion of the Christ.”

The John Templeton Foundation (www.templeton.org) serves as a philanthropic catalyst for research relating to what scientists and philosophers call the Big Questions. It supports work at the world’s top universities in such fields as theoretical physics, cosmology, evolutionary biology, cognitive science, and social science relating to love, forgiveness, creativity, purpose, and the nature and origin of religious belief. It also encourages informed, open-minded dialogue between scientists and theologians as they apply themselves to the most profound issues in their particular disciplines. Finally, it seeks to stimulate new thinking about wealth creation in the developing world, character education in schools and universities, and programs for cultivating the talents of gifted children.
