4 Takeaways We Can Have From Taylor Swift’s Engagement

It was the rock heard ’round the world on August 26 when megasuperstar Taylor Swift announced her engagement to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

The duo posted a joint Instagram collaboration featuring Swift in a classic pinstripe dress surrounded by flowers while Kelce dropped to one knee to place a giant diamond on the singer’s hand. Within seconds, the post went viral, sending fans and followers into a frenzy of celebration. And while neither person purports to be paragons of Christian virtue, believers can find several key takeaways from the experience at large.

  1. The world craves goodness and hope: Swift is known for her unlucky-in-love life that spawned more than 200 songs as she writes about revenge, heartache, frustration and disappointment. But when she announced something hopeful, the world responded en masse — almost triple the response as her album announcement just a few weeks prior. More than 30 million people liked her engagement post compared to 11 million who responded to her album announcement. Yes, Swifties support her through every venture, but it was her joy, her goodness and her hope that brought everyone else on board. It doesn’t matter that the vast majority of people are not personal friends with either person in the relationship; we still root for them and have happy hearts that they have found joy together.
  2. We’re wired for love: No one is talking about Swift’s past right now. No one is listing out her numerous ex-boyfriends. No one is captioning their stories with Swift’s heartbreaking lyrics. Instead, people are celebrating a “Love Story,” pun intended. In our deepest heart of hearts, we all crave to be known, to be loved completely by another person, to know that no matter what, they have our back. On earth, that looks like a marriage modeled after 1 Corinthians 13. But ultimately, it points to our desire to be loved by our Creator.
Psalm 139:13-18 tells us: “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand—when I awake, I am still with you.”
We are wired to be loved by God, and Psalm 139 describes how deeply He cares for us.

  4. We still value marriage: As much as the secular world wants to warn people away from marriage, even people far from Christ crave and celebrate a plan for marriage. The public at large isn’t telling the couple that they don’t need to be married, or that it’s just a piece of paper, or discouraging divorce statistics. It seems to be just the opposite, with everyone from content creators to stay-at-home-moms to men who only knew who Taylor Swift was after she started dating a famous football player are sending their warmest salutations. Think tanks and research groups can tell us all day that people are down on matrimony, but the swift and heartfelt response to the gym teacher and English teacher getting married proves that we still root for marriage.
  5. Nothing will satisfy us apart from Christ: Yes, the pictures are gorgeous. Yes, Swift and Kelce are all mooney-eyed over each other. Yes, they have millions of dollars in the bank as individuals, and their combined wealth means they will never lack any material possession here on earth. But what’s going on in their hearts? When the cameras are off, when the crowds quiet, and when they find themselves at an impasse in their relationship, who will they turn to for guidance? God is there in the quiet. He is the “Lover” of our souls. His love is extravagant, and it’s available to anyone who calls upon His name.

We pray for a firm foundation for Swift and Kelce as they begin their marriage and that they will delight themselves in the Lord and He can grant them the desires of their hearts.
