Actor Explains How You Can Change the Tide in Hollywood
By Movieguide® Contributor
Neal McDonough is so thankful for Hollywood’s turn towards faith-based content.
“It seems like there’s a tide of change going on right now in Hollywood, and I’m fortunate because my wife Ruve and I, we get to produce all of our films for Angel Studios, which is just an incredible machine that they have,” the actor told Fox News of the exciting trend. “Our film HOMESTEAD came out this last weekend, it’s doing very very well, so thank you, everyone, for your support.”
HOMESTEAD, a “hope” and “faith-driven” post-apocalyptic thriller, explores life after a nuclear bomb detonates in Los Angeles.
HOMESTEAD has lots of energy and momentum that drives the movie forward into a thought-provoking thriller. Neil McDonough delivers a strong performance as the wealthy man. HOMESTEAD has a strong Christian worldview promoting family and prayer. It raises some valid ethical questions in a scenario that feels realistic in today’s world. Fear leads good people to sin against their neighbors. However, Jesus tells us in Matthew 17:6, “Do not be afraid.” Eventually, the characters in HOMESTEAD learn that faith and trust in God can lift them up from the ashes. HOMSTEAD has some intense scenes of peril, chaos and violence. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for teenagers and adults.

McDonough, who stars in the movie, believes supporting films like this will change the tide in what Hollywood creates.
“The more you support films like this that actually talk about the family, talk about issues that the whole family can sit around the theater and watch and have a discussion after, if you like those types of films, please keep supporting what the Erwin brothers are doing, the Kendricks are doing, Dallas Jenkins is doing, everyone at Angel is doing,” he emphasized. “There’s a movement going on, and I’m just so blessed that we get to be a part of it.”
But according to McDonough, Hollywood isn’t just tolerating faith-based content; they’re asking for it.
“They just came out with a list with all the wants that a network wants…I would say eight out of 10 of them on the list that I just read, at the bottom it says, ‘If you have anything faith-based, we’re very interested this year,’” he revealed. “So, there’s just a change that’s going on that I love because these films are turning profits, and we keep the prices down. The advertising isn’t as much as you’d have with a big studio film, but the world of word-of-mouth has really caught on so well, and it’s building such a fan base that I just love that we are part of it.”
Producer DeVon Franklin recently spoke about why he isn’t surprised by the rise of faith-filled content.
“Storytelling has always been a bedrock of the Christian faith,” he explained. “So, it’s not a surprise that now storytelling through the means of Hollywood is how we are getting the message of the Gospel out. People are looking to be inspired, to have hope. When you look at the impact of faith-based content, the roots are we are more connected, we are more the same than we are different. The roots are love.”
