Alexa and Carlos PenaVega Have ‘So Much Fun’ Making Movies Together

Actors Carlos and Alexa PenaVega have a lot of fun filming movies together.

“It’s awesome, [but] it’s hard when he’s a diva on set,” Alexa joked on an episode of the “Unplanned” podcast.

“It’s great because we know our limits,” the SPY KIDS actress said. “Like if I’m working with another guy, I don’t know how much I can play around with him. I don’t know how much, like, okay,  if I ad-lib, is he going to be able to go back and forth with me, or is he going to be kind of stuck, and I can’t tell you how many times—God bless the other actors that I’ve worked with—but like, I throw a little something at them—”

“And they’re like dear in headlights,” Carlos jumped in, “because they practice that ‘you say this, I say this, you say this, I say this.’ Now, when you get to bigger movies, there are way better actors that don’t really do that, but a lot of the time, you get people who are like, they memorize their lines based on what you [say]. Okay so I’m going to hear this line, and then I say this, and then I hear this, and I say this,s and it’s like, well, then you’re really not listening.”

As husband and wife, they feel like they have a lot more freedom when they act together.

“We play around on set,” Carlos said. “If I think that she’s being too rigid, literally, like in the middle of a take, I’ll just start like—”

“Poking me,” Alexa chimed in as Carlos poked her.

“And she’s like, stop, and I’m like, you know you can do it better, and it’s like we have that flexibility, whereas I think if I was with another girl doing a scene, I couldn’t be like, ‘I think you can do that better,’” he joked.

Alexa believes that, unlike other married actor duos, viewers can see the chemistry between her and Carlos.

“A lot of people say that they don’t like watching couples on screen because there’s no chemistry because they know each other so well that there’s not like this like flirty back-and-forth,” she said. “But we’re so flirty in like real life that I don’t know, we just have so much fun together.”

Alexa said she loved her time with Carlos in their Hallmark movie, LOVE AT SEA.

She told TV Insider, “I love working with my husband. We really know what each other’s limits are and we can be way more playful. I think that there’s something to be said that’s really special about getting to work with your spouse. “

As new believers ten years ago, the couple had a rough start setting boundaries in their marriage when it came to kissing scenes.

When they were newlyweds, Alexa had been surprised by a plot change in a show she was filming. She had to film a couple of kissing scenes with a co-star while Carlos was away on tour with Big Time Rush. She called Carlos and told him about it after she had filmed the first one.

“So then I’m like in this hotel room balling. My friend George comes, and he’s like, what’s wrong, and I’m like, my wife cheated on me so bad, like the world was over,” Carlos said. “The world was over. I cannot perform tonight like not going to happen, and then we finally, you know, whatever I kind of manned up. I was like it’s fine. So two to three days later I fly straight to Canada after the tour to meet her on set.”

After an argument, they patched things up and set some much-needed boundaries.

The couple recently wrote a book called “What if Love is the Point?” which chronicles their love story and how they choose to navigate life.

About the book, Alexa said, “We laughed, we cried. This book was basically one big therapy session.”

Movieguide® previously reported about the couple’s lifestyle:

Alexa starred in the SPY KIDS franchise in the early 2000s, and Carlos is known for his role in Nickelodeon’s BIG TIME RUSH, which was both a band and a TV series that ran from 2009 to 2013. The couple also appears in some Hallmark movies both together and separately.

Despite their success, they felt like their values never aligned with the industry.

“We’ve never fit the Hollywood mold,” Alexa said. “We’ve never done things in the conventional way.”
