‘Remind Ourselves’: ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE Actor On Nazi Role

By Movieguide® Contributor

ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE’s Louis Hofmann is sharing his thoughts on the importance of telling stories about the impact of Nazism “to avoid it happening again.”

“I’ve portrayed quite a few Nazi characters,” Hofmann told Gold Derby. “Which doesn’t mean they’re all the same.”

In ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE, Hofmann plays Werner Pfennig, a German teenager who is forced to use his skills with radios to help the Nazis.

“I guess it’s very important to remind ourselves of what has happened and to keep making these films to avoid it happening again,” the actor explained of his Nazi roles.

Hofmann continued, “I think what I love most about [Werner] is his constant fight for the good and the moral compass that he tries to follow. What makes it more interesting is when he needs to leave the road and make morally wrong decisions, and that his gift of knowing how to build radios is also becoming his burden. I like when something you’re really good at is being taken against you and you’re being taken advantage of. It’s a really nice struggle within yourself.”

ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE, a four-part Netflix series based on a book of the same name, was an instant hit with audiences.

NPR’s review called the show “worthwhile and heartening,” while Mashable praised the series for “rejecting any cynicism in favor of bringing an optimistic message to beautiful, blinding light.”

Movieguide® previously reported on ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE’s success:

Netflix’s ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE was one of the most-streamed shows of November.

“The World War II Netflix drama was the only streaming original to crack the Top 10 streaming titles for the month with 2.14B minutes viewed,” Deadline reported. “That is a fairly incredible performance for the four-episode limited series, which joins a slate of titles with hundreds of episodes to help rack up those totals.”

This benchmark in viewership contributed to Netflix’s overall streaming stats; over the past month, the streaming service saw an 8.6% increase in usage.
