Andrew Garfield Announces Break From Acting, Wants To ‘Take Some Time To Just Be’

By Movieguide® Contributor

HACKSAW RIDGE star Andrew Garfield has had a huge year, from starring in fan-favorite SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME, to earning an Oscar nomination for his role in TICK, TICK…BOOM! However, the actor recently announced plans to take a break from acting.

“I’m actually really happy and excited to be very quiet and very still and take some time to just be,” Garfield told People. “It feels very important right now, especially after a lot of output, a lot of being out in the world, and giving a lot of energy to things that I’m very passionate about, but I have to kind of refill the well so that I can authentically carry on without it feeling like I have to keep up with the Joneses in some way.”

“It’s so tempting to live in that way of just always onto the next thing,” he continued. “But actually, and I know it’s a privilege that I get to even consider that, to actually take time.”

Garfield credited two other high-profile figures who’ve taken time off as his inspiration: Olympic gymnast Simone Biles and rapper Kendrick Lamar.

“I really admire anyone who can forego the temptation of having to be always on the up and up. Someone who can really be on their own rhythm, bang to the beat of their own drum,” he explained. “So that’s what I’m looking forward to. And I don’t know. Because honestly, if I pretended to know it would be a disservice to me and to an audience as well. So I want to make sure I make things that feel genuine and authentic to myself and hopefully connect in a deep way to an audience.”

“I hope that I can go on vacation,” the actor said when asked how he’ll spend his time off. “It’s more just, even getting on a plane right now feels like too much. I kind of want to lay down and just think and not think and watch other people’s work and just be really, really, really kind of… and listen to music and be with friends and eat burgers, you know, just kind of be a person.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Garfield’s attraction to faith-based roles:

Andrew Garfield has played many men across Christian denominations, from a pacifist and conscientious objector in HACKSAW RIDGE to a Catholic priest in SILENCE to charismatc televangelist Jim Bakker in THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE.

Garfield says there’s a reason for that.

“Questions of faith and spirituality, and the mystery of a spiritual life, is what I’m drawn to the most,” Garfield said. “If I wasn’t an actor, I think I’d be doing some kind of theological study.”

Though Garfield does not profess to be a Christian, he has been open about pursuing the Lord and how these roles have challenged his spiritual walk.

“What was really easy was falling in love with this person, was falling in love with Jesus Christ, that was the most surprising thing,” he said when talking about his preparation for his role in SILENCE. “That was the most remarkable thing — falling in love, and how easy it was to fall in love with Jesus.”
