Angel Studios Announces Three ‘Remarkable New Projects’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Angel Studios has unveiled their plans for upcoming projects, from a movie exploring the friendship between writers J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis to a biopic of an NBA star.
“We’ve got some remarkable new projects,” Angel co-founder Jordan Harmon shared, adding that the studio is “shaping the future of storytelling and film and shaping the future of our culture.”
Harmon revealed three new projects — FELLOWSHIP, A WEEK AWAY: THE SERIES and SWEETWATER.
FELLOWSHIP tells the story of Tolkien and Lewis’ relationship as they write the novels that would go on to become their legacy. Paul Syrstad is set to direct.
A WEEK AWAY: THE SERIES is a spin-off of the popular Netflix musical A WEEK AWAY and focuses on foster teens who attend summer camp.
“Think HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL, but way better and more meaningful,” Harmon said.
SWEETWATER tells the real-life story of Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton, the first African American to sign an NBA contract.
Harmon also shared that many projects that were announced earlier are in advanced stages of development, including animated fantasy series GABRIELLE AND THE GUARDIANS, post-apocalyptic drama HOMESTEAD and nature documentary series THE RIOT AND THE DANCE.
“We are excited about Angel’s upcoming slate of films for 2024 and 2025, and look forward to pushing audiences to fully immerse themselves in powerful stories at movie theaters,” Jared Geesey, chief distribution officer, told Deadline at CinemaCon earlier this year.
Brandon Purdie, Angel’s executive VP and head of global theatrical distribution, spoke about their studio’s projects’ popularity in an interview with IndieWire, saying, “We’re so polarized. What the cinema and movies can do is make this communal moment where we can view content and enjoy something as a society.”
He added that targeted marketing has helped many of Angel’s movies find large audiences, saying, “They’re able to build that list of people who say, not only do I want to see these movies, but wherever you come from or whatever your beliefs are, I want to do something about the state of things and I want to support something that I believe in.”
Movieguide® previously reported on Angel Studio’s upcoming slate of releases:
Angel Studios just shared the release dates for their upcoming projects during a presentation at CinemaCon.
The company announced BONHOEFFER, a WWII thriller, will premiere Nov. 22. Post-apocalyptic HOMESTEAD will hit theaters Dec. 20, while DAVID, an animated musical about the biblical King David, will be released Nov. 21, 2025.
“We are eternally grateful to our theatrical partners who helped champion our studio and enabled us to bring films that amplify light into movie theaters,” said SVP and distribution head Brandon Purdie. “There is no better place than CinemaCon to celebrate and give credit to our exhibition partners.”
