Angel Studios knows that the Gospel has no bounds as it seeks to reach a wider global audience through new international distributor deals to spread its faith-based projects.
“It’s a worldwide beat,” Angel Studios co-founder Jeffrey Harmon told The Hollywood Reporter about the faith-based audience. “There’s like an allergic reaction to faith in Hollywood, and it shouldn’t be. Look at KING OF KINGS, which has $67 million at the box office so far. Look at HOUSE OF DAVID, which was the number one show on Amazon Prime. The faith market is a big, big market, and that’s the reason why we’re a faith-friendly studio.”
The studio wants to improve its international distribution pipeline, and has already announced new deals this year with distributors that include Kova (U.K.), Saje (France), Kinostar (Germany) and Rialto (Australia and New Zealand). These new partnerships build on a network that already includes distribution deals Brazil, West Africa, Sri Lanka and more.
Angel has found success with international releases in the past, with 2023’s SOUND OF FREEDOM grossing $66 million of its $250 million total box office gross outside of America. A the same time, THE CHOSEN has found a strong worldwide audience, helping it break over 1 billion streams. The studio’s most recent theatrical release, KING OF KINGS, has received roughly 10% of its total box office gross overseas. A potion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
THE KING OF KINGS is a terrific, powerful way to introduce children to the story of Jesus in a way they can understand, through the dynamics of the Dickens family. In real life Charles Dickens was ambiguous about his Christian faith. However, there’s something exciting and special about the movie’s historical, Dickensian way of telling the story rather than other animated versions that use children or animals. THE KING OF KINGS is an excellent, acceptable version of the Gospel for children aged six and up.
Angel has been at the forefront of the recent rise of Christian media, constantly releasing new shows and movies for years. Harmon and his brothers founded the studio with the goal of creating content family’s could watch without any hesitations.
“We were just trying to build a system to create the kind of product we wanted for our families,” Harmon said. “I have six kids, and I want to grow up with the kind of films and TV series that Hollywood just doesn’t make anymore. We created the studio to bring these films into existence.”
Their goal has worked as Christian media has taken off in recent years with multiple new faith-based studios opening up and creating successful, high-quality content that rivals traditional Hollywood.
