Bianca Juarez Olthoff: ‘Prayer Is A Conversation With God’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Candace Cameron Bure and Bianca Juarez Olthoff are encouraging people to not feel “intimidated” to pray out loud.

“Prayer feels really overwhelming to a lot of people,” Olthoff began, and Bure quickly agreed.

She said, “I feel that way often! I force myself to pray out loud. I get very nervous publicly praying because I don’t feel like an eloquent prayer or speaker.”

Olthoff explained that “we hear people pray, and we feel intimidated,” pointing to people who might use more detailed language and vocabulary than we might.

“We made prayer feel like it’s something only the uber-elite spiritual warriors can do,” she continued. “But let’s call prayer what it is: prayer is a conversation with God of the universe.”

Olthoff has previously shared her thoughts on the power of prayer.

In a recent essay for Relevant Magazine, she encouraged readers to be the answer to others’ prayers.

“No one intentionally tries to ignore people in pain (unless they are a psychopath or someone who kicks little dogs). But sometimes, in our busyness, we fall into dangerous patterns, repeating the same old go-to verses and walking through emotionless prayers by rote,” Olthoff wrote. “We can get so used to the autopilot ritual or praying for each other that we stop believing we might actually be the answer to someone’s prayer, the solution to someone’s problem.

She added, “We might be the answer to someone’s problem. We might be the solution to someone’s issue. We might be the hesed we are praying for. Be brave and look for ways to help those in need.”

Bure has also spoken about the impact prayer has on her daily life.

“Prayer has transformed my life because not only is that my immediate and deep connection with God, but it reassures me that God is with me every second of the day,” Bure explained. “He’s by my side when I need Him to be by my side. He carries me when I need Him to carry me when I can’t take a step on my own. And He celebrates with me when it’s time to celebrate. … And that is truly because of my prayer life.”

Movieguide® previously reported:

Candace Cameron Bure and Bianca Juarez Olthoff recently sat down for a conversation about the different ways God communicates with us.

“How to hear God’s voice…it’s going to take some practice, and that’s okay,” Olthoff started. “You might fumble, you might stumble, but once you identify and can listen to the voice of God, I think that things begin to change in our personal life.”

The pair explained that, just like your friends and family members might communicate differently from you and others, God also uses different communication styles.

“The word of God says that God’s word is active and alive, sharper than a two-edged sword to pierce bone marrow,” Olthoff said. “So, if you want to hear God, my number one thing is, hey, open up the Bible.”
