Sony just made its first animated character content acquisition with SPOOKIZ, a non-verbal animated series.
The series boasts 6.1 million YouTube subscribers, with over 3.1 billion views. SPOOKIZ is a misfit gang of cute monsters who roam an elementary school at night.
The five monsters are Frankie, the Frankenstein foodie; Kebbi, a hyper goblin; Kongkong a mischief-making Chinese Ghost; Zizi, a smelly yet winsome zombie girl; and Cula, a proud vampire.
According to the Spookiz website, Cula is 3 feet tall, 110 years old, of the Dracula race and is “arrogant but lovable.”
Cula and his pals appear in one to three minute episodes on YouTube and other social media channels. Their fans are based all around the world, from the Philippines to the U.K. Sony will bring its musical background into the fold by incorporating some musical elements. It’s working on a new season and is developing some new monsters.
The studio behind SPOOKIZ is Keyring Co., based in South Korea and founded in 2013. It will be partnering with Sony. Sony aims to create “heartfelt activities through animation, music, and other mediums.” It will use its music industry expertise to target a larger demographic, market innovatively and create content “filled with originality.”
“Sony Music Labels is embarking on a new challenge,” said Sony representative director and president Manabu Tsujino. “As a record company, Sony Music Labels has acquired the globally beloved SPOOKIZ. Building on the expertise cultivated in the music business and with the support of creators and partners, Sony Music Labels will aim to transform these monsters into stars, much like the way artists are developed.”
