Christy Carlson Romano shared that she may have cancer after a preemptive test did not come back fully negative with its results.
“The other day I took this cancer screening. Both my parents had cancer. My mom beat it. My dad eventually didn’t. My grandmother on my mom’s side had lung cancer and died from that. I got the results back a little bit before filming down in Florida. My husband’s came back completely negative; mine did not come back completely negative,” she shared on Instagram. “So, basically what that means is I may have stagable cancer.”
“Next steps are to get a PET scan,” the Disney channel star continued. “I kinda, was like, in disbelief about it because I was filming and I was so happy to be back to that and I didn’t really want to think about it much until I got home…Time to have a strong sense of faith and know that it is in God’s hands.”

The scary news comes roughly a year after an accident at a shooting range caused her to get shot in the face. It was a miracle that she not only survived the accident but did not sustain any long-term damage done.
“I was hit in 5 places, one was less than an inch from hitting me directly in my right eye. Unfortunately a fragment got lodged behind my eye and it is too risky to remove surgically at this time,” Romano wrote shortly after the accident occurred. “Doctors will continue to monitor me (I can see normally at the moment).”
“With everything that happened, all I can think about is how grateful I am to be alive. I love my daughters, husband, family, and friends so much,” she added. “I saw my life flash before my eyes and I’m telling you, hug the people around you every chance you can. Life can change in an instant. 🙏.”
While the potential to have cancer would be nerve racking at any time, the potential diagnosis hit Romano especially hard because she knew James Van Der Beek quite well. The actor died earlier this month after battling colorectal cancer for over two years.
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,” his family shared on February 11. “He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
Please keep Romano in your prayers as she continues to walk through this process and find out if she has cancer or not. Pray that she will continue to lean on the Lord and trust that He truly works all things for His good.
