Derek Hough Opens Up About Wife’s Health Scare: ‘Moments of Grace’

By Movieguide® Contributor

DANCING WITH THE STAR’s Derek Hough is opening up about his wife, Hayley Erbert’s, health emergency that occurred late last year.

“It was, you know, just a million miles an hour, and then it just came to a screeching halt…very, very quickly, and it was jolting, to say the least,” Hough told GOOD MORNING AMERICA.

While wrapping up the “Symphony of Dance” tour in Washington D.C., a blood vessel burst in Erbert’s brain, causing her to be confused and disoriented. Upon arriving at the hospital, she was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma. She underwent an emergency craniotomy and cranioplasty.

“I think anybody who’s experienced anything dramatic or sudden and unexpected can understand that feeling of just, you know, just disbelief for how it feels unfathomable,” Hough continued.

“During that time, I was realizing how important she is not just in my love, my life, but just in everyday things,” he said. “I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t even know how to do that,’ or ‘I don’t know how to ask,’ Hayley does, that’s how reliant you are on her…It was a moment to step up for sure. In many, many ways. I thought she was strong. And I had no idea. I actually had no idea how strong she was really until just a couple months ago.”

As Hough prepares to return to his tour, he shared how his wife’s health scare will impact his return to dance.

“It’s gonna be a great show, always gonna read the energy but also…on a personal level, just to remember that things do get better,” he said.

“It’s been a time of uncertainty and fear and a lot of emotions, but at the same time it’s been a time of absolute gratitude and moments of grace,” Hough added.

Derek Hough and his wife, Hayley Erbert, opened up about her recent health emergency…

“It’s been quite the journey. There’s been so much that has happened in two months. Lots of emotions, lots of just… all the things,” Erbert said in a recent Instagram video.

Hough added, “It’s been wild going from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. But I have to say, throughout this experience, this woman has been unbelievable, and her perseverance and her acceptance of the whole situation, her strength, it’s been remarkable to witness firsthand. She really is a miracle, and it’s been miraculous, and it’s still a journey.”

“To this day, I still have really good days, and I have really bad days, emotionally and physically sometimes, but I’m doing so much better every single day,” Erbert said. “Truly, there is so much progress every day, and I’m so grateful for that.”
