Detroit Tigers Outfielder ‘Can’t Do’ Anything Without Jesus

Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter recently reflected on how he relied on Jesus this past season.

In a new Instagram post, the athlete shared a series of photos of him and his wife, Lauren, as well as with his teammates and coaches on the field.

Carpenter captioned the post with Psalm 23:1-6:

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
    He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
    for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
    I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
    forever.

“I can’t do what I do in life, and on the field, without the power of Jesus Christ the LORD,” the outfielder said. “I’m so far from perfect, so far from deserving, but Psalm 23 shows His faithfulness and character in spite of our sin.”

“What a season, just praise the name of Jesus,” he concluded.

Carpenter wrapped up his 2024 season on a high before an injury sidelines him.

According to a Detroit Tigers community page, Carpenter’s “ninth inning, three-run home run off ace closer Emmanuel Clase in Game 2 will be remembered as one of the great postseason home runs in franchise history. Even in their Game 5 loss to the Cleveland Guardians, Carpenter came up with a huge RBI knock while limping around with a hamstring injury suffered in the series. But that injury held him back and likely would’ve proven a real problem to overcome even if the team had defeated the Guardians to advance.”

Carpenter is looking forward to his 2025 season and what the Lord has in store for him.
