Disney Star ‘Grateful to Be Alive’ After Getting Shot in the Face
By Movieguide® Contributor
EVEN STEVEN’s Christy Carlson Romano celebrated her husband’s birthday at the shooting range, but the game took a turn when another party’s bullet landed under her eye.
“So, I got shot in the eye. It was not fun,” Romano shared in an Instagram video Feb. 8.
“Yesterday was my husband’s birthday and I took him to shoot clay pigeons as a present. There was another party with us and they unsafely fired in the wrong direction and shot me in the face. @thebrendanrooney immediately sprung into action, assessed me, and rushed me to the hospital,” she said of her husband.
“I was hit in 5 places, one was less than an inch from hitting me directly in my right eye. “Unfortunately a fragment got lodged behind my eye and it is too risky to remove surgically at this time. Doctors will continue to monitor me (I can see normally at the moment).”
“With everything that happened, all I can think about is how grateful I am to be alive. I love my daughters, husband, family, and friends so much. I saw my life flash before my eyes and I’m telling you, hug the people around you every chance you can. Life can change in an instant. 🙏,” she said.
Her husband, Brendan Rooney, also shared about the experience on Instagram.
“My wife gets shot, I ask to take a picture for the record, she flips me the bird and smiles (she nearly lost her eye mind you). When they say there’s no such thing as, ‘The One’ they lie,” he captioned a photo.
“I love you so much and I’m so grateful you’re safe and that you’re going to be okay. I will be by your side forever,” he added.
“Kiss your loved ones,” he shared on his Instagram story.
Nickelodeon actress Daniella Monet commented on Romano’s post, “Holy moly Christy! What a miracle you’re ok and in good decent spirits. So so strong! Hope you heal soon ❤️”

Ramono recently opened up about the difficulties of being a child star.
“The infrastructure isn’t really there to help people feel anything but competitive against each other,” she said. “I feel like I lost a lot of choice growing up…My mom, she was my manager…until I was 21 and I asked her to step down.”
“I was seeking autonomy. I was seeking independence, but I’m sort of still uncertain if I handled it the right way,” she said.
Romano struggled with her family and work dynamic, and eventually turned to alcohol.
“I became an alcoholic…I drank to feel less stressed out,” she admitted. “I was self medicating. But I’ve met my husband, and when I got pregnant, we decided this is a great time to just stop. But I’ve been sober eight years, and I’ve worked through all of that truly.”
Romano is currently on Fox’s reality show, SPECIAL FORCES: WORLD’S TOUGHEST TEST Season 3, which came out Jan. 4. Romano trained rigorously for months before she went on the show. In the series, she had to jump from a helicopter and get buried alive.
“I learned that I can do hard things and that I can believe in myself past just being an actress, being a public person,” she said. “It’s a very personal journey to have confidence in oneself that has nothing to do with other people’s acceptance. On this journey, I was able to kind of just be with myself and my own limitations. So I proved to myself that I have this inner strength and that it’s up to me to believe in myself.”
