DOG MAN led the box office for the second weekend in a row, continuing the trend of family-friendly movies topping the charts in 2025.

Grossing $13.7 million, DOG MAN received the top marks during the Super Bowl weekend’s slow box office. This built on its $36 million domestic debut, which placed it among the top January debuts of all time last weekend.

Taking place in the Captain Underpants universe, DOG MAN follows the story of a canine police officer working to take down a super villain and save his city. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

DOG MAN is funny and exciting, with many wacky and touching moments. The love of innocent Li’l Petey transforms the lives of both Dog Man and Petey. Petey also learns that being a “do gooder” makes people happier, including himself. Also, Petey displays the satisfaction that comes with being a good father. Thus, DOG MAN has an uplifting moral worldview with strong Christian, redemptive and moral values. The character of Li’l Petey is absolutely adorable and will melt your heart. MOVIEGIUIDE® advises caution for younger children because of cartoon violence.

“Audience score have been stellar,” said Universal’s president of domestic distribution Jim Orr. “Fingers crossed for a great run like we’ve seen on DreamWork’s titles.”

While the first quarter of the year is always slow for theaters before things start to heat up for the summer, 2025 has already seen success for family-friendly movies. So far, the top four movies at the box office are family-friendly flicks, and two more blockbusters are debuting next weekend.

PADDINGTON IN PERU will hit domestic theaters next weekend after already grossing over $100 million at the global box office through early overseas releases. This movie is sure to attract young audiences and add on to a franchise which has already grossed over $600 million across the first two movies. Meanwhile, families with teens are sure to hit theaters for CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD which is also releasing to theaters next weekend. The movie is the next installment in the MCU, introducing Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross/Red Hulk.

The continued success of family-friendly movies along with the excitement for the two releasing next week continues to prove that movies catered to a family audience are the most important for Hollywood’s bottom line. While studios have ignored this fact in the past, many are now turning towards this audience as the theater business struggles, leading to an influx of quality content appropriate for all audiences.
