Family-Friendly Movies Shined at the Box Office This Weekend

Family-friendly movies are already making a splash at the box office this year, with movies like MUFASA, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 and PADDINGTON IN PERU making waves in theaters.
MUFASA had a relatively slow release debut, opening to $35 million. However, it has since gained significant steam, topping the domestic box office for multiple weeks while holding the No. 1 spot in many overseas markets going on six consecutive weeks. Movieguide® recently recognized the movie’s excellence by nominating it for Best Family Movie at this year’s Movieguide® Awards.
As for SONIC 3, the movie has grossed $447 million at the global box office, lifting the franchise’s total gross above $1 billion. The movie has shined thanks to its star-studded cast and family-friendly values, with Paramount already announcing a fourth movie on the way, slated for 2027.
Meanwhile, PADDINGTON IN PERU has been released in a variety of overseas markets, already grossing $83 million before its U.S. release on Valentine’s Day. The third movie in the series follows the beloved Paddington Bear as he visits his Aunt Lucy before embarking on an epic adventure through the Amazon Rainforest and the mountain peaks of Peru.
The success of these movies early into the year continues a trend that has been apparent for years. Family-friendly movies always trump their abhorrent, blasphemous counterparts. While the beginning months of the year are typically slow at the box office, these movies have managed to draw major audiences through their widespread appeal.
Their continued audience pull also helps keep them in theaters for longer, allowing them to continue to gross even months after their release. MOANA 2, for example — which released just after Thanksgiving — recently jumped over the $1 billion mark, becoming the third most successful sequel ever released by Disney.
