Dolly Parton On Cancel Culture: ‘If God Can Forgive You, So Can I’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Dolly Parton is hitting back at “cancel culture” as she defends her new duet with Kid Rock.

“Somebody was talking to me the other day, ‘How could you do this [song] with Kid?’” she said of their upcoming song, “Either Or.” “I said, ‘Hey, just because I love you don’t mean I don’t love Kid Rock. Just because I love Kid Rock don’t mean I don’t love you.’ I don’t condemn or criticize. I just accept and love.”

Parton continued, “I love everybody. I don’t criticize, nor I don’t condone nor condemn. I just accept them. But anyhow, just because I love you don’t mean I don’t love Kid Rock in that God way.”

The country superstar pointed to her Christian faith as the reason why she doesn’t condone “canceling” people.

“We all make mistakes. We don’t all get caught at it. But also when somebody makes a mistake, it depends on who they are. That’s what God is there for,” she explained.

Parton shared, “Now I happen to believe in God; I’m a faith-based person, so therefore I am able to see it like that. A lot of people don’t, but even still, everybody deserves a second chance. You deserve to be innocent until you’re proven guilty. Even when you’re proven guilty, if God can forgive you, so can I. If God can forgive you, we all should forgive one another.”

“Either Or” will be featured on her upcoming album, “Rockstar,” along with a duet with John Fogerty called “As Long as I Can See the Light.”

“I try to find the God-light in everybody and everybody shines,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “I see that in everybody. I go right to that God-light, and I don’t care if you’re Black or white or green or alien gray. I go to that, because we’re all pieces of God and we all have that little God-light inside us. Some don’t get to let it shine. If I don’t see it first out, I’d go searching. That’s how I accept everybody because I know that we’re all pieces of God.”

Parton frequently speaks about her faith and how it impacts both her music and her life.

In an interview with WSMV, the singer was asked about her hopes for her legacy. Parton pointed to the Imagination Library, an organization where she gives books to children and gave her thoughts on humanitarian work.

“I also always feel like that when you get in a position to help that you should have a Christian heart,” she explained. “Giving and receiving…They’re both supposed to be done, you know, with an open heart and all that, but I just really feel like it’s important to give back and we’re supposed to do that.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Parton’s Imagination Library:

Dolly Parton is celebrating gifting 200 million books to young children through her Imagination Library organization.

“It’s been one of my greatest gifts in life to help instill a love of reading through my Imagination Library,” Parton said. “Reaching 200 million books worldwide is a major milestone that I’m so very proud of, and I want to thank all of our local program partners, funders and supporters from the bottom of my heart. But we’re just getting warmed up, we have so much more to do! Together, we can inspire even more children to dream more, learn more, care more, and be more.”
