Donald Trump Explains Why He’s Always Stayed Sober

Former President Donald Trump explained how his older brother’s crazy lifestyle encouraged him to stay away from drugs, smoking and alcohol.
“I had a great older brother who taught me a lesson. ‘Don’t drink’ he said, ‘don’t smoke.’ He smoked and he drank,” Trump told Theo Von’s “This Past Weekend” podcast. “He was a great guy, he was a very handsome guy, he was older, quite a bit older, and he had a problem with alcohol and smok[ing].”
Trump’s brother, Fred Jr., however, knew this lifestyle was a problem. Though he was unable to get himself out of it, he urged Trump to not become a slave to it.
“I was amazed because he had so much going; he had everything going, I think. It probably happened in college at a fraternity maybe, or, I don’t know, somewhere along the line it happened and all of a sudden — you know this is not unique, this is a very common story unfortunately — but then the family would see it and start to notice it,” Trump explained. “And it didn’t get any better.”
“But it was very important for him to convey to me not to have this problem,” he added. “And I couldn’t have been successful if I had that problem. And I think maybe I’m a personality type where I could have had the problem if I drank.”
Ultimately Fred Jr. was unable to find freedom from this addiction and died at the age of 42 from a heart attack induced by his alcohol use.
“The reason it’s good to talk about this is it might help other people,” Trump said. “If it helps one person, it’s worth a conversation.”
Trump’s advice is for people to never start drinking, smoking or doing drugs. If their body never gets used to the feeling of taking these substances, then they will never have a chance to get addicted to them.
“I’m not a drinker,” he said in 2018. “I can honestly say I never had a beer in my life.”
“If you don’t drink, you don’t miss it,” he told Von. “I mean, I don’t even think about alcohol or about cigarettes,” he added. “I don’t think about any of that. If you don’t take drugs or if you don’t have alcohol, it’s real easy not to drink.”
He’s urged his children to avoid substances as well, saying, “I’ve been very tough on my children with respect to drink.”
It is encouraging to have such a strong leader be open about their sobriety and encourage others to stay away from destructive substances.

“The doctor at the hospital said he never saw anything like this, he called it a miracle,” he added.
