Christian artist Ellie Holcomb released a new single, “Give Me Your Hand,” and it challenged her to deepen her relationship with the God who heals — but not always in the way we want.

“‘If you had been here, my brother would not have died.’ — These honest words from Martha rock me. They ring so true. How do you talk to a God who CAN heal, but doesn’t heal in the way you hoped for?” Holcomb shared in a post on social media.

“I love that Martha spoke the ache of that feeling right to Jesus’ face. Don’t so many of us feel it? God….if You CAN heal. Why didn’t you? Martha didn’t know at that moment that Jesus would call her brother Lazarus out of a grave,” she continued. “She didn’t know that she felt wounded by the One who would enter into ALL of our wounds.”

“She didn’t know any of that, but what she experienced before the miracle of her brother being raised from the dead was even more profound to me….Jesus wept,” Holcomb added. “He wept for the way death stings. Wept for the loss and the ache every human knows in one way or another. Wept for the broken hearts in a broken world. He wept for his friends, who were mourning their brother, for his friend who passed away.”

She continued, explaining that Jesus knew He would call Lazarus from the grave, and He also knew he would “enter the grave to make a way THROUGH death to life eternal.”

“But here in this moment…time freezes, and we remember that God is with us even as we wrestle and grieve and doubt and pray and ache and hope and give up hope…we don’t walk through one moment of this beautiful and broken life alone,” she concluded.

Her new single is all about “living with sorrow and questions while being held by the Man of Sorrows, Himself” as she points her listeners to the hope we have in Christ.

She sings at the end of the song:

I don’t know what tomorrow’s holding
I don’t think I’ll ever understand
I’ll always have this sorrow with me, oh
I’ll believe in the resurrection
Holding out hope for the Promised Land
I might die with this promise in me, oh

And You give me your hand
Oh, You give me your hand, oh

In an interview with Relevant Magazine, Holcomb revealed has felt “God’s love most tangibly” through having joy in the midst of sorrows.

“Every hard thing I’ve ever let myself walk into, every time I’ve grieved, I’ve encountered God’s love,” she said. “Those low places have become the biggest evidence of His presence.”

“So many people had their whole plan disrupted,” she added.

“I’ve taken a lot of wrong turns,” she continued. “I can’t tell you how to avoid mistakes. But I can tell you I’ve found a lot of grace when I’ve fallen down.”

“Give Me Your Hand” is a beautiful reminder that though we live in a world filled with sorrow, we can walk hand in hand with Jesus though it all.
