Angel Studios just acquired the animated movie THE KING OF KINGS: A STORY TOLD BY CHARLES DICKENS, which will release just in time for Easter next spring.

“Created by mofac animation, THE KING OF KINGS features voice talent from an all-star cast, explores Charles Dickens’ desire to connect with his son by sharing the greatest story ever told,” a press release stated.

“As billions around the world observe Holy Week, THE KING OF KINGS will launch in theaters on April 11,” said Jared Geesey, Chief Distribution Officer for Angel Studios. “With its star-studded cast and stunning animation, THE KING OF KINGS has captured the hearts of the Angel Guild, and we are honored to open it at Easter as part of our 2025 slate.”

The movie is based on Dickens’ little-known short story, “The Life of Our Lord.” He read the story to his family every year around Christmas time. The movie depicts Dickens, his son Walter, and their feline companion Willa as they explore Jesus’ story.

The movie’s website elaborates on the plot: “Renowned storyteller Charles Dickens finds it challenging to bond with his imaginative son, Walter, amidst his busy career. After Walter disrupts one of Dickens’ readings, Dickens decides to share the story of Jesus Christ with him, hoping to bridge the gap between them. As Dickens narrates the story, Walter becomes captivated, experiencing the events of Jesus’ life vividly Through the journey of Jesus, Walter and Dickens’ ‘relationship deepens, culminating in a bond of love forged through storytelling.”

“After seeing that the film was an Angel-sized project, the producers and their original distributor, Blue Harbor Entertainment, brought the project to Angel Studios, knowing the partnership would be a perfect fit and a strategic move,” the press release said.

“This project has been a passion project of mine for nearly a decade,” said Seong-ho Jang, the movie’s director. “I am so excited to bring it to the world, and Angel is the ideal partner to take this film to the market on a global scale.”

The stars lending their voices in the movie are Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Pierce Brosnan, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Forest Whitaker, Ben Kingsley and Roman Griffin Davis.

“It is through the Dickens family that our audience experiences the life of Jesus Christ, and Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman and Roman Griffin Davis bring all the emotion, awe, heart and gravitas to these essential characters,” said producer Anfernee Kim in a statement earlier this year. “These three actors are at the core of our story, and anchor a truly impressive cast.”

“The screenplay is by Jang and Rob Edwards (THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG), with Cinematography by Woo-hyung Kim (THE LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL). Producers include Jang and Kim. Blue Harbor Entertainment will receive an ‘in association with’ credit on the film,” the press release stated.
