Family-Friendly Movies THE GARFIELD MOVIE and IF Top Box Office

By Movieguide® Contributor

Family-friendly movies THE GARFIELD MOVIE and IF are dominating at the box office.

The Hollywood Reporter wrote that THE GARFIELD MOVIE took in an estimated $14 million “for a domestic tally of $51.6 million,” adding that it “crossed the $100 million mark overseas for a global tally of $152.2 million.”

THE GARFIELD MOVIE is a hit with audiences and critics. Screen Rant called it “a near-perfect adaptation of the original comic strips.”

“The art style was deeply reminiscent of Davis’ work, which added a delightful touch of nostalgia to the project. However, what stood out the most was the unique brand of comedy, which was uniquely comparable to how the original creator of Garfield structured his comics in the 1980s and 1990s,” they continued. “The structure of the 2024 film even feels like a cartoon out of the 1980s, with plenty of outrageous feats and slap-stick style misadventures to make audiences nostalgic.”

A portion of the Movieguide® review reads:

The best part of THE GARFIELD MOVIE is the father and son relationship. At the end, it is deeply emotive and brings tears. It also has some very funny, exciting moments. THE GARFIELD MOVIE is never boring. It also has many heartwarming emotional moments and a very strong moral worldview. However, some of the scary moments and jeopardy in THE GARFIELD MOVIE are a little too intense.

IF is also showing strong box office growth, grossing “another $10.5 million domestically for a North American tally of $80.1 million and $135 million worldwide.”

Rotten Tomatoes called IF “a sweet ode to rediscovering one’s inner child” and said it “works as old-fashioned family entertainment.”

A portion of the Movieguide® review reads:

IF is beautifully shot and performed. It also has some fun adventures and humorous situations, with lots of creativity. However, what’s most surprising about the movie are its heartfelt dramatic moments, which are emotionally powerful. IF is a celebration of imagination, creativity, love, and family. The movie promotes the idea that adults should maintain a youthful attitude and not abandon the imagination and love they had as children. IF is relatively family friendly. However, it’s marred by some meandering moments, four light obscenities and 15 light profanities. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older pre-teen children.
