Fans Prefer THE RINGS OF POWER Over Immoral HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, Media Report Suggests

By Movieguide® Staff

According to an in-depth analysis of the media, fans embraced Amazon Primes’ LOTR: THE RINGS OF POWER, despite initial mixed reviews.

The Season 1 finale of THE RINGS OF POWER aired on Oct. 14, and fans took to Twitter to share their excitement for the show.

The German website Wettfreunde.net looked at 375,000 tweets to assess if fans’ reactions to both to THE RINGS OF POWER, and also HBO Max’s HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, were positive or negative.

For THE RINGS OF POWER, the group’s research found that 47.3 percent of tweets were positive, 19.9 percent were negative, and 32.8 percent were neutral.

On the other hand, HOUSE OF THE DRAGON fell behind in terms of positive reviews from Twitter users, with only 35.3 percent positive tweets, 17.7 percent negative, and 47 percent neutral.

Despite the natural comparisons to the two huge, fantasy epics, the creators behind THE RINGS OF POWER said from the start that they did not want to create another GAME OF THRONES; a series rife with excessive violence and nudity.

Instead, they opted to create a series filled with strong morals, including redemption, forgiveness, and “leaning into the light.”

In a recent Q&A, Salke said that her first project for Amazon was to bring a TV series about J.R.R. Tolkein’s Middle Earth to life.

“The essence of the project was clear from the moment I got here, because it emanated from Jeff Bezos and the whole company,” she said. “They rallied behind making this extraordinary rights deal that was also very groundbreaking for us as a company and in the industry.”

“Salke said they also wanted to make the show appropriate for families to watch together, a rare endeavor in today’s world of immoral entertainment.

“There’s so much darkness in the world,” she said. “Leaning into light was the other thing that was really appealing to everybody — bringing something to our global customer base that is hopeful and has light and that a family can watch. So many people have grown up with this literature, and we wanted this series to pay it forward for new generations of Tolkien lovers.”

Salke added that fans made their opinion known from the outset and said they did not want to re-create another show like GAME OF THRONES.

“The line we’ve been using is ‘If you’re old enough to read the books, you’re old enough to watch the show.’ We knew from the beginning that this was not our ‘Game of Thrones.’ In fact, the fans spoke up from the minute the deal was closed, saying, ‘Please don’t try to insert sex and a level of provocative violence,’ things that don’t feel true to the stories that Tolkien wanted to tell,” she said.

A portion of Movieguide®’s review of the Season 1 finale of THE RINGS OF POWER, reads

Streaming on Amazon Prime, Episode Eight of RINGS OF POWER is very satisfying, heartfelt and entertaining. Brilliantly written, it captures many of the redemptive, moral themes in Tolkien’s LORD OF THE RINGS. Besides the story of the three elven rings, it also refers to the creation of the other rings of power, including the “one ring to rule them all. . . and in the darkness bind them.” The RINGS OF POWER: Season One conclusion promotes wisdom, prayer, hope, goodness, sacrifice, faith in providence, family, service, and purity.
