AMERICAN IDOL star Gabby Barrett shared that unlearning certain habits brings more peace to her life and reduces the pressure she feels.
“I’ve been thinking about a couple of things I’m trying to unlearn,” she began a recent Instagram video.
“The first one is feeling like I have to rush everything. I used to put so much pressure on myself to be further along by a certain age,” Barrett explained. “Like, if I wasn’t, I was somehow behind, and I’m realizing now that some of the best things in life actually take time, and when you try to force them, you kind of miss what’s right in front of you.”
“And the second one is trying to prove myself to people who were probably never going to understand me anyways,” the singer reflected. “That one took me a minute but it’s been really freeing to stop overthinking and just be okay with not everyone getting you or understanding you and I think there’s a lot of peace in that.”

Barrett quickly rose to stardom after finishing third on Season 16 of AMERICAN IDOL. In 2021, she won the Top New Artist award at the Billboard Music Awards along with nine total nominations that year alone.
“I had no idea this was going to happen. Ever since getting off AMERICAN lDOL and hitting back at the ground, moving to Nashville and diving into everything and working hard to get a record deal, writing songs, and really getting into the community, the music industry has been absolutely wonderful towards me,” Barrett said in 2021. “Which is extremely humbling. I’m very blessed for that.”
However, as her career has taken off and she has received numerous accolades, the most important change in her life since her appearance on AMERICAN IDOL is becoming a mother.
“There is a term in the Christian faith called ‘dying to yourself,’ and definitely when you have a baby you learn to die to yourself and everything is just about them,” Barrett, who is a strong Christian, said. “And it’s actually really helpful because you definitely become more selfless and help other people in a lot of different ways.”
Despite meeting her husband only eight years ago, the couple already has three children together and are focused on raising them and instilling a strong faith into their lives.
“[Having children] ha[s] made me realize that my priority is family and being a mother first, above everything else. That’s what I would truly be happy with, if I could pick one thing,” Barrett previously said.
Praise the Lord for Barrett’s success and the way she remains rooted in her faith and allows God to move within her life and continue to teach her new things.
